I. Topic
Students will use knowledge of dinosaurs to determine where dinosaurs would fit into the
modern world if dinosaurs were to return.
II. Objective/Standard
Objective: Following the read-aloud of If the Dinosaurs Came Back, the students will be able to
identify and illustrate one way dinosaurs would help them in their lives.
Standards:
-RL.K.1 With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
-RL.K.7 With prompting and support, describe the relationship between illustrations and the
story in which they appear (e.g., what moment in a story an illustration depicts).
-W.K.3 Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to narrate a single event or several
loosely linked events, tell about the events in the order in which they occurred, and provide a
reaction to what happened.
-VA:Cr2.1.Ka Through experimentation, build skills in various media and approaches to art
making.
V. Adaptations
A. For ELLs, make sure that they know key vocabulary terms. Make sure that I
speak slowly and clearly. Clarify that this book is about what could happen, but
that it is not real.
B. Make sure that there are plenty of opportunities for students to move. Make sure
that all students have an opportunity to answer questions.
C. Make sure that everything is clearly explained so that students can follow
directions. Give one direction at a time so that students know exactly what they
should be doing.
D. If there is not enough time, only allow for a few students to share their pictures
and what their dinosaurs would do if they came back.
E. If there is extra time, allow all students to share their artwork. Allow them to
share what their dinosaur is doing, along with how the picture is showing what the
dinosaur is doing.
VI. Evaluation-
A. Formative assessment- throughout the story, closure
B. Summative assessment- image drawn and words written on page
VII. Reflection
A. Student-
1. Did the students understand the story?
2. Did the students understand the idea of background and foreground?
3. Did the students have enough time to create their artwork?
B. Teacher-
1. Did I speak clear enough for the students to understand me?
2. Did I give the students enough guidance for the artwork, but enough room
for creativity?
3. Would anything need to be retaught on the next day?
