GRE Exam Pattern 2010

GRE Exam pattern will not change in 2009 and 2010. To get high GRE
Score, you have to know what kind of questions are asked in GRE exam
and prepare for exam accordingly.

GRE Exam Pattern

GRE Exam pattern for Computer based Test (CBT).
  Analytical Writing – 2 essays. Total Score for 2 essay is 6.0
 Issue Essay – 45 Minutes
 Argument Essay – 30 Minutes
 Verbal – 30 Questions and maximum 30 minutes. Score can be
from 200 to 800. Score above 400 is good, but high verbal requires
good practice. GRE Verbal includes following question types [ How to
improve your GRE Vocabulary?]
 Analogies
 Antonyms
 Sentence Completion
 Reading Comprehension
 Quantitative Reasoning – 28 questions, 45 minutes. Score range
200 to 800. It’s easy to score above 700, but perfect 800 requires
practice.
 Quantitative Comparison
 Problem Solving
 Data Interpretation
 Unscored Section – Test will include one unscored Verbal or
quantitative section.
GRE exam pattern will change from 2011. GRE Exam Pattern 2011.

Hi all,
I took GRE on March 22 and I found that there wasn’t any section
which was not scored.I mean, I just had 1 extra argument task, which
they said, would not be scored.
I thought i would get a section which can either be scored or not be
scored. To my surprise, there wasn’t anything of that sort.

Hi all,
Its really high time for us to appreciate the services rendered by HSB
by keeping us updated on informations related to GRE and
admission process in US.All details given by them regarding GRE
can be easily understood by everyone. I have a doubt in analytical
writing section. Are the essays written in analytical section should be
written in American English or is it accepted if the contents are in
British English. I have this doubt because being Indians, we are used
more to British English while GRE is much concentrated with
America

The Educational Testing Services (ETS), United States of America, conducts the
standardized examination GRE (Graduate Record Examination). GRE aims at
measuring the ability of a candidate which is demanded by nearly all the institutes
abroad which offer admissionto various streams such as Research Programs,
FellowshipPrograms and Graduate Studies. The representative of ETS in India holds
the responsibility to conduct the exam. The institutes look for the GRE scores among
various other parameters to make a student eligible foradmission to various courses
except Management. For admission to Management stream the exam is GMAT
(Graduate Management Admission Test).

It is not necessary that having a high score in GRE alone guarantees a candidate in
some Graduate School or University abroad but obviously this test forms the first
major step towards getting admission to any foreign university or Graduate School of
one’s choice.

The Educational Testing Services, United States administers the test in two sets all
over the globe. The two sets are GRE General Tests and GRE Subject Tests.

The first test i.e. the GRE General Test is aimed to measure quantitative reasoning,
analytical writing, critical thinking and verbal reasoning skills of the candidate. These
skills do not belong to any particular field of study and are actually the skills acquired
by the candidate over a long period.

The GRE Subject Tests are in eight specific subjects and test the undergraduate
achievements.
A candidate can sit for either of the two tests mentioned above or for both. It
depends on the desired course and the university requirements.

GRE

• The GRE is now only available as a computer-adaptive test. This is how it works: instead of
having a pre-determined mixture of easy, medium, and hard questions, the computer will
select questions for you based on how well you are doing. The first question will be of
medium difficulty; if you get it right, the second question will be selected from a large
group of questions that are a little harder; if you get the first question wrong, the second
will be a little easier. The result is that the test automatically adjusts to your skill level. The
Tough questions have more credit than easier ones.
• You can still earn a very high score even if you answer several questions incorrectly.
Correct answers to Harder questions leads to large score as compared to easier questions.
This means to Get large score more difficult questions has to be answered.
• Some (Very few) Universities may demand Subject GRE.
• After completing your exam you can send your scores (free!) to four Universities so be
prepared.
• Your GRE scores are valid for 5 years.
• You may appear again in GRE after one month.

Total testing time is up to three hours, not including the research section. The directions at the
beginning of each section specify the total number of questions in the section and the time allowed
for the section.

The Analytical Writing section is always first. For the Issue task, two topics will be presented and
you will choose one. The Argument task does not present a choice of topics; instead, one topic will
be presented.

The Verbal and Quantitative sections may appear in any order, including an unidentified unscored
section. Treat each section presented during your test as if it counts.

Some Facts

• Maximum score for sections Verbal, Quantitative is 800. An analytical writing score will be
reported on a 0-6 score scale, in half-point increments.
• GRE is generally required by universities in North America (USA and Canada).
• Most Universities require General GRE for admission to MS and Ph.D. in Engineering
Sciences.
• Generally for engineering Students score above 1200 (750+ 450+ 4) is considered good for
admission for middle order universities ranked between 40 to 90 .There may be some
deviations.
• For all engineering Students GRE Q is most important for best results GRE Q must be well
above 740 ,GRE A above 650(A>4.0/6.0), GRE V above 450.
• GRE score can considerably improve University Ranking. TOEFL is most important. TOEFL
score must be well above 213.Generally
• Top 50 ranked Universities may require GRE>1300(770+,530+,>4/6) and TOEFL>250.For
International students Verbal section is quite difficult. So they must prepare hard on
vocabulary.

Note: Work hard in GRE Quantitative. Work on Permutation/combination, probability,

mean/median/mode... etc.
