Term- is an external representation of a concept and the ultimate structural element of a proposition.

It may be oral or written or printed

a. Significant term- stands for the essence of something. (noun and pronoun)
b. Non- significant- does not stand for the essence of something. (demonstrative pronouns,
adjectives and proper noun)
c. Simple term- single word. Ex. Hilda is a nun. (Hilda is the subject; nun is the predicate)
d. Complex term- group of words standing for one idea. Ex. The winked ninety-year-old woman
operated this morning is a cousin of Apolinario Mabini.

Comprehension of Term- is the sum total of all notes which constitute the meaning of a concept.

Ex. Man is an animal, a rational, living body, an organism, a sentient, material substance, a being.

Extension of Term- is the sum total of the particulars to which the comprehension of a concept can be applied.

Ex. Man is a rational animal. rational animal is the comprehension of man while the particular or
individual men in whom the elements of rationality and animality are found and, therefore, can be applied to are the
extension of man.

1. Absolute extension- is the sum total of all actual or possible individual subjects signified by the term.
2. Functional extension- is the sum total of individual subjects present to the mind of the moment of
discourse- at the moment I think, speak and write.
Kinds of Functional Extension
a. Singular- a term is singular if it stands for a single definite individual or group.
b. Particular- a term is particular when it stands for an indefinite part of an absolute
extension.
c. Universal- a term is universal when it stands for every subject signified.

Univocal term- means exactly the same thing in at least two occurrences.

Equivocal term- have different meanings in at least two occurrences.
