SECONDARY SCHOOL PROFILE : CLASS OF 2018

THE CIS MISSION


Chinese International School is committed to the achievement of academic excellence and is characterized and enriched by its dual-
language program in Chinese (Mandarin) and English. Its mission is to inspire students to a life-long love of learning. The school
encourages intellectual curiosity and independent, critical and creative thinking which allow students to maximise their potential and
promote the growth of the whole person. Chinese International School prepares its students to be compassionate, ethical and
responsible individuals, contributing to local and global communities, respectful of other views, beliefs and cultures, and concerned
to make a difference in the world.

ACCREDITATION/MEMBERSHIPS
Chinese International School is registered with the Hong Kong Government Education Bureau. In 2010, Chinese International
School received a ten-year re-accreditation as an international school from the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the New
England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC).

The school is a member of The College Board, NACAC (National Association of College Admission Counselors), IACAC
(International division of NACAC), CASE (Council for the Advancement and Support of Education), EARCOS (East Asia Regional
Council of Schools), ECIS (European Council of Independent Schools) and NAIS (National Association of Independent Schools).

THE FACULTY
Chinese International School has 180 full-time faculty and professional staff members and 5 part-time, among whom are held 185
advanced certificates or graduate degrees. Teachers come from Australia, Canada, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Hong Kong,
Hungary, India, Ireland, South Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and
the United States.

THE STUDENT BODY


Chinese International School currently enrols 667 students in Primary School (Reception to Year 6) and 873 students in Secondary
School (Years 7 to 13). The student body consists of students from Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark,
Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the
Philippines, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland,Taiwan, Thailand, the United
Kingdom, and the United States.

As a dual-language school, CIS is unusual in that neither of its two languages are predominant in the Hong Kong community where
Cantonese is commonly spoken. Few of our students gain exposure to Mandarin beyond their school experience.

ACADEMIC PROGRAM: YEARS 10 - 13


The languages of instruction at CIS are English and Chinese (Mandarin). The school operates on a term system with examinations
only in Year 12 (May) and Year 13 (February and May). CIS students are not ranked, nor do we compute a Grade Point Average.

YEARS 10 - 11: YEARS 12 - 13:


During Years 10 and 11, all students complete the last All students pursue a course of study in the International Baccalaureate Diploma

the option of spending the year at our residential study center Chinese Economics Biology Physics Theatre Arts
in Hangzhou, China. Participation in the Hangzhou CIS English Geography Computer Science Mathematics Visual Arts
program is indicated on the transcript by the (HZ) French History Chemistry Film

Students who chose to remain in Hong Kong completed their Students complete their IBDP Examinations in May of Year 13, with final results

GRADING SYSTEM
Beginning August 2001, the Secondary School adopted the International Baccalaureate (IB) seven point grading scale (1-7) as the only
grading system for Year 7 through Year 13. This 1-7 scale is used by the IB Organization in grading students for the Diploma as well as
the Middle Years Program. Grades of 1-7 are used for all internal assessments, external examinations, and transcripts.
