VI.C.6.a. The program meets the required minimum level of credit
hours (or its recognized equivalent) in total content and hours of
occupational and general education courses:
a. 120 semester hours, 180 quarter hours, or their equivalent normally
earned over a period of 8 semesters, 12 quarters, or their equivalent.
Transfer of credit for work at other institutions may be granted. Credit
may be awarded for life experiences through prior learning assessment
(PLA), such as DANTES, CLEP or ACE recommendations.

b. 60 semester hours, 90 quarter hours, or their equivalent in the area

of concentration for which the degree is awarded, not to include subject

Definition of General Education

common experience of all educated persons, including subject matter from
the humanities, mathematics, sciences, and the social sciences. Examples of
general education include, but are not limited to:
Arts & Communications - Art, music, history, philosophy, logic, foreign

courses satisfy the general education requirement for AOS degree programs.
Definition of Upper Level Course
Upper Level Course Traditionally
designated as junior and senior level
courses taught and identified as such in the
course numbering system.
Two Basic Options to Consider

Dual Enrollment BSMCON

Continue Reynolds Offer upper level general
Community College education courses at the
consortium agreement College.

AND

obtain an additional
consortium agreement
with a 4-year institution.
Why is offering
upper level
general
education
courses at
BSMCON the
preferred
option?
Additional Results
Eliminate dual enrollment
Prevent enrollment reporting errors
Decrease workload of multiple departments
Registrar
Financial Aid
Advisors
Increase revenue
Support BSN expansion
Provide academic concentrations that support Bon
Secours mission, vision, and SQP
Reduce barriers for students to complete degree
Decrease total credits to 120
Decrease BSN program to 5 semesters
PROCESS
What changes in process are needed to obtain the stated results?
Admission Requirements NUR 2.01
Require 46 general education credits within the
given cluster model prior to admission to BSMCON
(BSN and RN-BSN)

BSN - Spring 2018 applicants 95% of the

applicants have 46 or more credits prior to entry

RN-BSN Would increase general education

requirements from 41 to 46 credits prior to entry
General Education Requirements - ADM 2.07

No prior bachelors degree

Reduce total number of general education credits to 52
Decrease Cluster 2 - Creative Aesthetic to 3 required credits
Require 6 credits of BSMCON general education courses
With a previous bachelor's degree
Keep current requirements and add 6 credits of BSMCON general
education courses

50% BSN students are admitted with a previous bachelors degree

20% RN-BSN students are admitted with a previous bachelors

degree
BSN Curriculum Plan NUR 3.01 & 3.02

Combine Sophomore I and Sophomore II nursing

courses to one semester = 12 credits
Add 6 credits of BSMCON general education
courses to the curriculum plan in the following
Sophomore semester total of 15 credits
Senior I semester total of 16 credits
Total credits reduced to 120
RN-BSN Curriculum Plan NUR 3.01 & 3.02
Maintain total BSMCON total credits (33 credits)
Reduce nursing credits by 6
Add 6 credits of BSMCON general education courses
Students can complete the RN-BSN curriculum in 5
semesters with credit loads at 6-7 total semester
credit hours
Total credits reduced to 120
Academic Concentrations
Provide academic concentrations
that support Bon Secours
mission, vision, and strategic
quality plan.
Offering these academic
concentrations will provide an
added value to our students.
Each concentration would require
~ 12 credits to include a
combination of
