Theneedtohavethesupertyphooncategoryistohaveanemphasisonthestrengthandintensityofthetropicalcycloneandtheseverityofitsimpactonthecommunity,thestaterunweatherbureausaidina
releasedatedMarch24.

Beforetherevisedclassification,PAGASAonlyusedthreecategoriestoclassifystorms.

ThetermsupertyphoonwaswidelyutilizedbythelocalmediatorefertopowerfultyphoonslikeYolanda(Haiyan)in2013,whichkilledmorethan6,000peopleanddevastatedpartsoftheVisayas.

Tropicalcyclonesarenowclassifiedinfourcategories:tropicaldepression(TD),tropicalstorm(TS),typhoon(TY),andsupertyphoon.

Atropicaldepressionhasmaximumsustainedwindsofupto61kilometersperhour(kph),whiletropicalstormwillhavesustainedwindsof62to118kph.

Atyphoon,ontheotherhand,haswindspeedsrangingfrom118to220kph,whileasupertyphoonwillhavesustainedwindsofmorethan220kph.
