Dear Constituents,
As autumn falls upon us and we approach another election, I would like to take a mo-
ment to discuss the importance of being an informed citizen and voting. With citizen-
ship comes a duty to exercise our precious right to vote. Indeed, for our Democracy
to succeed, we must all participate.

Our founding fathers established a system where people (then white male landown-
ers) had the right to elect representatives who would represent their interests in gov-
ernment. Today, every citizen, regardless of race, gender, or religion has the right to
vote as long as they are 18 years of age and not a convicted felon. Benjamin Franklin
once wrote, In free governments, the rulers are the servants and the people their
superiors and sovereigns!

As citizens, our right to vote is a hard-won privilege that entails a tremendous re-
sponsibility. Voting provides each of us with the opportunity to have our voices
heard. When we vote, we express our commitment to the vitality of our communities
and the improvement of society. Our votes, in unison with those of our fellow citi-
zens, allow us to influence where tax dollars are spent, determine what community
services are important, and affect the quality of life we share at home, statewide, and
nationally.

The right to vote also comes with a responsibility to educate ourselves on the issues
and the candidates of the day. With the technology available today, our ability to
make an informed decision is literally right at our fingertips. Unlike our ancestors, we
Americans have the advantage of being able to access vast amounts of information in
an instant through the internet, television, mailings from a candidate, or even making
a simple phone call to the proponent/opponent of an issue or the candidates directly.

Although this years election-cycle will not have the same zest as last years presiden-
tial election, the lack of drama and media attention does not mean that this election
is any less important. Local officials such as mayors, city council members, judges,
and school boards all play an integral role in serving our communities. This year, take
the time to read your local newspapers and other sources of information regarding
the candidates and issues that may be on your ballot. When we are informed, we are
in a better position to make better choices that can have a positive impact, whether
at home, in our neighborhoods, or across our great country! On Tuesday November
7th, take a moment and exercise your precious right. Please take a moment and vote!

Sincerely

John Rogers

Legislative update/Engaging your legislature and the committee process

In an effort to keep you more connected to your government and

whats happening at your Statehouse, here is a list of current bills
in the House that I thought you might find interesting.

The formal votes during House sessions may give the impression
that every vote has been decided in advance. This is actually the
case because in-depth examination of legislation takes place in
committee hearings.
