Magnetic board

Magnetic pictures to go with the story

Worksheet with star

Crayons or markers

Procedure:

1. Anticipatory set: Raise your hand if you love your mom. (Students raise their hands) Raise your
hand if you love your dad. (Students raise their hands) Raise your hand if you love your
brothers. (Students raise their hands) Raise your hand if you love your sisters. (Students raise
their hands) There are a lot of people that we love a lot, and todays book is going to be about
a mom who loves her son a whole lot!
2. Read Count the Ways, Little Brown Bear and after each page, add up the images to the magnet
board. Have the children count the images as I add them to the board.
3. At the end of the story, review what the objects or activities are that the mother loves less than
the one. The mother said, I love you more than [point to pie] what? (Pie!), until all of the
objects or activities have been reviewed.
4. At the end of the story, ask the students to think about something they really love Alright, so I
want you to think about something that you really love (Ex. I really love pizza.) and whisper
this to your friend sitting next to you. Bring them back together. Now, do we love our family
more than that thing that you really love? (Yes.) Now tell your neighbor, who do you love
more than your favorite thing? (I love my mom more than pizza.)
5. Explain that we will be coloring a picture of that thing (or activity) that we love less than our
family. Read the phrase at the top that says, I love you more than Explain that they will write
their name on the line in the bottom right corner, and inside the star they will draw a picture of
something that they love less than their family. Remind them that this will be something you
want to do your very best work on.
6. I will pull students in groups of 3-4 randomly until everyone has finished the art project.

Extended Activity:

For kindergarten they would be able to do a fill in the blank activity, I love________, more
than_____________ and then color a picture.

For third grade they would be able to write their own examples with the same pattern of adding one
more object or activity for each example.

Child Evaluation:

The student will be able to say that they love someone more than something, making the love of a
person more significant than the love of an object or activity. They will be able to give an example of
someone that they love more than something.
