Lesson Plan for Character Analysis

Objective: SWBAT analyze characters in Chapters 3 and 4 (pgs. 26-46) of Frankenstein.

Exemplar Response
Question: Complete a STEAL chart for the Monster in Chapter 4 of Frankenstein.

Speech:
- Dont scream, boy! said the Thing. I am not the way I look. There is nothing to be
afraid of (p. 42).
- Awake, my dearest love. And come away with me forever (p. 45).
Thoughts:
- Suddenly, he thought, The boy is so young that I can teach him. I will take him away
with me. And he will learn to be my friend! (p. 42).
- He thought he could hide in the farmers barn (p. 43).

Effect on Others:
- But the Thing put his hands around Williams throat and shook him. True, he only meant
to make him quiet down. But it was a childs throat! William stopped moving. My dear,
sweet little brother was dead! (p. 43).
- The Monster grew angry, because he thinks the girl will never love him. Thus, he plants
to locket on her and hopes she will be killed.

Actions:
- The Monster set out to find Victor Frankenstein (p. 41).
- He meets both a little boy and a beautiful girl, but he gets very angry with both
characters.

Looks:
- The Monster is very ugly and scares everyone who sees him, including the little boy he
met in this chapter (p. 42).

What/Why/How
What: Analyze characters in a piece of fiction
Why: Analyzing characters allows us to understand why a character does something, how their
actions affect other characters, and how they affect the plot of the story
How: Students will use the STEAL framework to determine character traits. Look at a
characters: speech, thoughts, effect on others, actions, and looks.

Speech: Look for quotation marks; the words say, mention, tell, etc.; or a time when a character
is talking.
Thought: Look for the words thought, think, etc.
Effect on Others: Look for a time when a character interacts with another character. Think about
a time when something you did affected someone else (saying something mean, a fight, etc.).
Actions: Look for a verb; the character has to do something.
Looks : Look for adjectives, or a time the author describes the character.

STEAL for the Monster:


Speech:
- I am a thing of the graveyards! I was made to be hated! I hate myself! (pg. 35).

Thought:
- What did all those sounds mean? How he wished he could tell! (p. 29).

Effect on Others:
- For Agatha looked at him, then fell to the floor (p. 38).
- Felix grabbed an ax that was hanging on the wall. He swung it with all his might. The ax
went into the Monsters body (p. 38).

Actions:
- The Monster decided to stay near them (p. 29).
- So, day after day, he stayed there in his little hut. And hour after hour, he watched his
new family through the hole in the wall.
- The Monster would gather nuts and berries and leave them for Agatha and Felix
- Quickly he picked up a large rock and threw it at the face in the pond (p. 32).

Looks:
- But then, one moonlit night, he came across a pond. He stared into it and saw a face. It
was like none he had ever seen before. Not like any those he loved (p. 32).
- The Monster realized he was really ugly (p. 32).
