Section 01: Determining Printer Condition and Service History Research

1. Compare the model and serial number of the printer with the work order:
If the printer... Then
Information matches the work order Continue
Information does not match the work order Set this printer to the side and notify your
supervisor of the discrepancy

2. Scrap the printer if it has one of the following conditions:


Frame damage.
Excessive toner/dust contamination.
Rodent/insect contamination.

3. Prepare the printer for testing:


Step Action
A Open the front cover and verify the presence of the transfer roller.
B Install a working toner cartridge.
C Load tray 1 with at least 20 pages of plain letter size paper.
D Attach a power cord to the printer and a grounded power source.
E Move the printers power switch to the ON ( | ) position.

4. Does the printer go to Ready?


If the printer displays Then
An error. Go to step 7
Ready Continue testing.

5. Update the RIP and Engine code with WinCSU (refer to the WinCSU Firmware Update Process document).
If the update fails Then
Once Try updating again
Twice Go to step 7

6. Use the steps below to Print the quality pages:


Step Action
A Turn the printer off.
B Turn the printer on while holding the Select and the Return buttons.
C Release the buttons when Performing Self Test appears on the LCD screen.
D Press the > menu button until Prt Quality Pgs is displayed, and press the Select button.
E The 4 quality test pages will print (the last page should be blank)

F Use these pages to isolate print quality problems. Refer to the Print Quality Service checks starting on page 2-50 of the
4523 service manual for diagnosis if needed.
G After the 4 Quality Pages finish printing, turn the printer off and back on to return the printer to the normal operating
mode.

7. Determine what parts will be needed to repair the printer.


If the parts are Then

8. Check the printers previous repair history in the tracking system.

Section 02: Visual Inspection

1. Clean printers with toner/dust contamination by removing the top, left and right covers and use compressed air and/or
a toner vacuum. Avoid contaminating the print head with dust.
2. Check the covers for damage and clean as needed. All covers must meet the A, B, and C surface cosmetics
requirements.
3. Check the operator panel, buttons and printed text for damage.

4. Check the stack control flags and paper support for damage.

5. Open the printers upper and lower front cover and clean the interior of the printer, as needed. Attention: If canned or
compressed air is being used to clean the printer avoid contaminating the printhead on the underside of the top cover.

6. Check the TLI label on the upper front cover assembly for damage.

7. Check the UL label (pictured below) inside the front cover for damage

8. Remove the charge roller and check it for damage. Also, make sure the bronze bearing is in place on the left side.
9. Remove the transfer roller:
a. Clean the area under the transfer roller with a toner vac.
b. Check the roller for wear and damage
c. Check the copper colored contact on the right side for damage.
d. Re-install the transfer roller.

10. Check the input flags (pictured below) for damage.


a. Push the flags down then release and the flags should spring back up.

11. Check the fuser input guide and the strip of brushes (just past the transfer roller) for contamination or damage.
12. Check the paper feed alignment rollers and toner sensor for damage.

13. Check the 4 HVPS contacts (pictured below) for damage. Note: Make sure the printer is not attached to power at this
point.

14. Check the upper cover hinges and cartridge detents for damage.

15. Open the MP feeder.


a. Pull out the paper extender slide and check it for damage.
b. Confirm that the green paper guide functions properly.
c. Check the paper feed deflector for damage.
d. Check MP feeder paper flag for damage.

16. Remove the paper tray.


a. Check the functionality of the green paper size guides.
b. Check the separation pad for damage or excessive wear (pictured below).
c. Check for paper or obstructions in the paper pass-thru.

d. Check the functionality of the white release switch (pictured above right) on the tray.
Push the metal paper tray plate all the way down.
Confirm it locks into place.
Push in on the white release tab. Confirm the metal plate pops back up. CAUTION! The plate will pop
up very fast with some force. It may help to hold down on the plate and gently release it.

17. Gently lay the printer on its side and check the following on the bottom of the printer:
a. Check the 4 four rubber feet.
b. Check the auto-connect for damage.
c. Check the paper tray bias arm and spring for damage. The tray bias arm should spring back when pressed.
d. Check the tray grounding springs for damage.

e. Examine the bottom auto-connect plug for the lower paper feed options.

f. On duplex models:
Check the front and rear duplex jam access doors for damage.
Pull down on the green tab for each jam access cover and make sure it moves freely and springs
back when released.
Check the duplex paper path flag for damage. Push the flag down and release it, it should spring back
up.
Check for damage to the duplex feed rollers.
Check for damage to the duplex feed roller drive belt (pictured below).

18. Check the tray 1 pick roller:


a. Set the printer in the upright position, install a toner cartridge and make sure the covers are closed.
b. Power the printer back on.
c. Attempt printing a menu settings page from the Utilities menu on the printer operator panel.
d. Using a flashlight or other light source, look into the tray 1 area of the printer. Look for the pick roller to rotate.
The pick roller will be towards the left hand side. Look at the condition of the curved surface of the pick roller as
it goes by. Replace the roller if you see any damage or excessive wear.

19. Check the Parallel, USB or network port (if applicable) on the back of the printer for damage. Note: On network models
insert a network cable and make sure the port will hold the cable.

20. Open the outer redrive door.


a. Extend the door (red arrow below) and check for damage.
b. Check the paper diverter for damage and functionality.
c. Check the ribs for damage or contamination.
d. Check the 4 grey rubber exit rollers for damage.

Section 03: Functional Testing

1. Use the LPT1 port to test parallel communications:


Attach a parallel cable to the printer.
Open the Parallel Port Test Pages shortcut on the PC desktop.
Click on File and Print to run the test pages.
Keep page #1 and #35 with the printer for QC verification.

2. Listen for unusual noises coming from the printer and make repairs as needed.

3. Access the printers Diagnostics mode:


a. Turn the printer off.
b. Turn the printer on while holding the Go and the Return buttons.
c. Release the buttons when Performing Self Test appears on the LCD screen.

4. Check the print Registration:


Print the Quick Test page.
Note: Make sure the paper guides in the tray are set properly before making any registration changes.
Changing the Top margin moves the entire page image up or down the page.
Decreasing the top margin setting will move the image/text up the page.
Increasing the top margin value moves the image/text down the page.
Changing the Bottom margin moves only the bottom margin. Use this setting to elongate or shrink the overall
image vertically. Note: Always set the top margin first before setting the bottom margin.
Changing the Left margin moves the entire page image left or right across the page.
Changing the Right margin moves only the right margin. Use this setting to elongate or shrink the overall image
horizontally. Note: Always set the left margin first before setting the right margin.
Keep the final registration page with the printer for QC verification.

5. MP feeder print test:


a. Select the MP feeder as the paper source.
b. Use plain letter size paper.
c. Select Continuous.
d. Print 15 pages.
e. Keep one page with the printer for QC verification.

6. Clear the Error Log:


a. Press the left or right Menu button until the operator panel shows ERROR LOG as a choice.
b. Press the Select button to enter the error log.
c. Select Clear Log from the Error Log menu.
d. Press the Select button when the screen displays YES to clear the log. The screen should display the message
Empty Error Log.

7. Perform the Duplex Quick Test (when applicable).


Print 15 copies of the duplex test.
Keep one page with the printer for QC verification.

8. Turn the printer off and back on, or select EXIT DIAGNOSTICS to return the printer to the normal operating mode.

Section 04: Network Card Testing

1. Select the Network Menu on the printer's operator panel.


2. Select Network Option # X or STD Network.
3. Select Network # Setup or STD Network Setup on the display, and the word Print should now be displayed.
4. Press and hold the Go button and tap the Left Menu button (<).
5. SE Menu and General should be displayed.
6. Press the (< or >) Menu button until NVRAM is displayed and press Select.
7. Press the (< or >) Menu button until Reinit NVRAM is displayed and press Select.
8. The NVRAM on the network adapter has been returned to the factory defaults.
9. The printer will return to the Ready state once the defaults have been restored.

10. Print the network setup page:


a. Press the right Menu button on the printers operator panel to reach the Utilities menu
b. Press the Select button
c. Press the Right menu button to reach Print Net Setup
d. Press the Select button to print the page.

11. On the page that prints verify the following:


Status = Not Connected
Active = Yes
DHCP,BOOTP,RARP Enabled = Yes, Yes, Yes
Address Source = Manual
Address = 0.0.0.0
View the image below for reference if needed

12. Plug a network cable into the printer.


13. The printer should automatically acquire an IP address and print a network settings page.
14. Locate the IP address on the network page (example pictured below) that prints.

Note: 192.168.0.102 is an example of an IP address, each time this process is used the IP address may vary.

15. Disconnect the network cable.


16. Select the Network Menu on the printer's operator panel.
17. Select Network Option # X or STD Network.
18. Select Network # Setup or STD Network Setup on the display, and the word Print should now be displayed.
19. Press and hold the Go button and tap the Left Menu button (<).
20. SE Menu and General should be displayed.
21. Press the (< or >) Menu button until NVRAM is displayed and press Select.
22. Press the (< or >) Menu button until Reinit NVRAM is displayed and press Select.
23. The NVRAM on the network adapter has been returned to the factory defaults.
24. The printer will return to the Ready state once the defaults have been restored.

25. Print the network setup page:


a. Press the right Menu button on the printers operator panel to reach the Utilities menu
b. Press the Select button
c. Press the Right menu button to reach Print Net Setup
d. Press the Select button to print the page.

26. On the page that prints verify the following:


Status = Not Connected
Active = Yes
DHCP,BOOTP,RARP Enabled = Yes, Yes, Yes
Address Source = Manual
Address = 0.0.0.0
Keep this page with the printer to show that the network card was reset.

Section 05: System Configuration and Testing

1. Connect to the WinCSU stand alone system through the USB port.
2. Double-click on CSU icon on the desktop to load the test program.
3. Click Change Top Bill -> Browse -> TLI Masters -> T430 Folder then select the TLI number matching with the
printer (TLI number can be found by opening the front cover). Click OK.
4. In WinCSU-Select TLI, make sure the TLI number is correct, then click OK.
5. Click CSU test, then click Start.
6. Enter the TLI number, then click OK.
7. Enter the serial number, then click OK.
8. Load manual MPFEEDER with letter paper. Click Pass.
9. Review print samples. Verify there are no:
Light or blurred characters
Toner smudges on the front or back
Vertical Streaks
Smears or ruboffs
10. Indicate if Print Test passed. Note: Keep the printouts with the printer for QC verification.
11. Wait for the test to complete.
12. Verify all parts of the test pass.

Section 06: RPQ/TLI Instructions

TLI# 75P6868

Use the following instructions to install a plastic spacer in tray 1, if needed.

1. Press and lock lift plate down, as if loading paper

2. Peel tape backing off of Plastic Spacer. Note: the spacer may be clear, black or grey in color.

3. Make sure that the plastic spacer is positioned between the metal lift plate and the plastic wall. Also, make sure the
plastic block is touching the bottom of the plastic tray.

4. Press firmly on the lower half of the plastic piece to insure proper adhesion
