Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolical disease caused by the inability
of cells to use glucose due to lack of production or inadequacy of insulin in pancreas beta cells, as indicated by hyperglicemia, which refers to abnormally high blood sugar levels. Diabetes has become the fourth biggest cause of death in the records of world health. Every year, 3.2 millions of deaths caused by diabetes are noted. This number means that one person dies per second, or 6 persons die per minute. According to WHOs records, patients with DM reached 8.4 million people (1.9%) in Indonesia. This rate will likely increase, with the prediction of 21.3 million people (2.8 %) suffering from DM in the year 2030. The tendency of Diabetes Mellitus to affect complications of other diseases such as heart attack, respiratory disorders, eye diseases, stroke, chronic kidney disease, foot wounds that cannot be cured easily, and impotence, has become a big problem to threaten the lives and productivity of patients and surely takes a high amount of health expenses. This study aims at finding out the correlation between patients obedience to control risk factors of DM and occurence of DM complications. For the population, this study took outpatients of DM at West Nusa Tenggara Public Hospital in October 2008. As noted, there were 75 of 568 patients of DM who sought medical treatments at Internal Medicine Policlinic who experienced complications. In order to know the level of significance of the correlation between dietary patterns, disobedience in doing physical activities, disobedience to take intensive treatments on one side and DM complications on the other side, Chi Square test was conducted. Meanwhile, Odd Ratio (OR) was used to value the rate of risk of DM complication occurence due to disobedience in controlling dietary patterns, physical activities, and taking intensive treatments. The results of the study reveal that there is a significant correlation between the obedience to control dietary habit and DM complications (p = 0.005, with p < 0.05),between the obedience to control physical activities and DM complications (p = 0.010, with p < 0.05), and between the obedience to take intensive treatments and DM complications (p = 0.026, with p < 0.05). Thus, it can be concluded that there is a meaningful correlation between obedience to control risk factors of occurrence of DM complications and the occurrence of complications.
Key word : dietary, physical activity, intensive treatment, DM complications.
v Here, the obedience to control dietary patters served as the highest risk factor that caused the occurrence of DM complications.
