Question 3

Read the information sheet below. Then, answer questions (a) (i).

How to take good photographs

1 Hold your camera steadily

Grip the camera as firmly as possible. It often helps if you stand with your feet apart.

Squeeze the shutter button gently.

2 Compose your picture with care

Look very carefully through the viewfinder before you press the shutter.

Is the most interesting part of your picture in the centre?

Try to fill the frame with your subject.

Never have the sun shining directly into your eyes. Have the sun shining from the side.

3 Photograph people in an interesting way

How many photographs show friends and family just standing stiffly before the camera, with
artificial smiles on their faces? Why not show them doing something they normally do,
something that tells us more about them?

If possible, photograph them when they do not know you are doing it.

4 Use flash sensibly

The flash on your camera cannot illuminate objects beyond three metres. It certainly cannot
light up large groups or a whole room!

Beware of red eye! People should not look straight at the camera when you are using a
flash.

5 Read books

There are many books published to help beginners. Maybe you can find one or two in your
library or bookshop. A few hours reading will enhance your skills.

6 Study interesting photographs

Carefully study photographs that you find pleasing. What can you learn from them?
