Abstract
While controlling a site that incorporates the ComAp IM-NT BTB unit, it can be useful for user to go
through the following materials to learn how to approach the configuration. With the information
provided in this demonstration course, a user should be able to apply the BTB controller application to
any complex switchgear system.

List of controllers
IM-NT, IM-NT-BB, IM-NTC-BB

General approach to controller setup

When implementing sequence of operations, we should ensure that the system does not get stuck in
undefined state. It is supposed to move on to another stage, based on input signals and
nd
measurement. The only operators input upon standard conditions should be acknowledging 2 level
alarms.
For the bus-tie breaker controller setup it means that user combines multiple high-end controller
features to achieve it:

1. Broadcast key signals from all controllers present on site. This means generator and mains
statuses (healthy, not healthy, operational, alarm level 1 or 2, etc) and most importantly
switchgear feedbacks.
2. Receive relevant signals by the BTB controller.
3. Bring them as inputs to the PLC editor or assign them directly to the functions
4. Force setpoints from Process Control group to achieve intended BTB operation based on the
logic implemented in Step 3.

BTB closing using the Dead bus closing and Sync Enable setpoints
Identify conditions, when dead bus closing or bus synchronization should take place
Decide whether Dead bus closing and Sync Enable setpoints can remain enabled all the
time, or need to be forced upon certain conditions
If needed, create logic resulting in force value activation. Note: 1 signal can force multiple
setpoints, or 1 setpoint can be forced by multiple signals.
Note: When synchronizing over an InteliMains-controlled breaker, it uses the Loadsharing
regulation loop to control the speed of generators. This is common to all InteliMains
applications (MCB, MGCB, BTB).
Example of the steps above:

And the affected Process Control setpoints:

Grouplink function

Complex sites with multiple mains incomers and BTB breakers are split into logical groups. Normally,
the grouplink function is to be linked with the BTB feedback. For comprehensive information
regarding this feature, please follow the Reference Guide or enter the context in help in
InteliMonitor/GenConfig.
Note: It is not complementary to perform the group-linking within ComAp BTB controller. Related
setpoints and binary function are present even in genset controllers (InteliGen, InteliSys MINT
applications) and other IntleiMains applications (MCB and MGCB). This covers sites with manual
BTB breaker. Only dead bus closing is then possible though.

BTB blocking and opening in AUT mode

On many occasions, it is requested to disable BTB from closing. Use the BTB Disable function. Note:
blocking function does not open the already closed breaker.
To open the controller in AUT mode, user has following options:
nd
1. Activate a 2 level protection- either in PLC editor using the ForceProt block or a standard
binary protection (protection can be configured only to the input, therefore you have to apply
a VPI/O linkage from the PLC function output). Use Breaker open protection type.
2. Use force value to activate the Follow (COXCOoperation with eXternal device) mode in
Process Control setpoints. Then the BTB controller accepts breaker status changes, caused
by either manual control or by a supervisory control unit, such as PLC. Use Force Sync to
make the BTB controller synchronize the 2 sides of the bus. Use In Synchronism LOG
BOUT to indicate BTB can be closed.

Example of PLC logic activating a protection via a VPI/O linkage. The same can be achieved using
the ForceProt PLC block:
