Message from the Minister of Community
Development, Culture and the Arts
Dr. the Honourable Nyan Gadsby-Dolly, MP
It is my honour once more to bring Divali greetings to
the Hindu community and the entire nation on behalf of
the Ministry of Community Development, Culture and
the Arts.
Divali is the foremost observance among Hindu festivities
and the core messages of prosperity and triumph over ma-
levolence permeates all walks of life. I am heartened that
the traditions associated with this observance have been
embraced by the broader population, and have become
iconic expressions of our experience here in Trinidad
and Tobago.
This year, the mental and physical transference from
darkness to light has an even more potent meaning in
light of the tragedies faced by our Caribbean region. I
pray that warmth of the deyas reaches the hearts of our
brothers and sisters as they begin the arduous task of reconstructing their lives.
I congratulate the Indo-Caribbean Cultural Centre for continuing to provide a platform for
disseminating knowledge and traditions of the East Indian community, thus protecting this
heritage. Your efforts support the Ministrys thrust to safeguard and celebrate our cultural
diversity, and I am certain that readers both home and abroad share in this appreciation.
The focus of this years Divali magazine edition, the Secondary Schools Sanskritik
Sangam, speaks to the early cultivation of essential cultural and educational practices
among students, resulting in more confident and expressive minds leaving the school
system and entering roles of leadership. Using literary avenues to project our spirituality
and cultural identity helps to secure that connection with our ancestral roots, and it is
important for us all to understand and appreciate our origins.
Undertakings such as this competition have the vast potential to reverse negative social
trends in our society, and I hope that this initiative can be replicated at the Primary School
level and across various communities as we strive to harness the positive potential from
our future generation. It is also my fervent hope that the participants of the Sanskritik
Sangam use their talents to expand our local cultural industry, and contribute meaningfully
to the suite of technical and cultural programmes offered by the Ministry.
I also commend our educators, who selflessly devoted their expertise, time and effort
to sustaining this programme over the past thirty-eight (38) years. Your efforts deserve
recognition and I urge you to continue to deliver this programme to our students.
May the lights of Divali continue to illuminate our souls and take us to the enlightened
path. Let us share in the harmony, love and communal bonds forged during this auspicious
occasion.

Shubh Divali to all.

I am delighted to learn that the Indo-Caribbean Cultural Centre is once
again publishing its annual magazine on the auspicious occasion of
Diwali, the Festival of Lights.
Diwali is a blessed occasion celebrated not only by our Hindu brothers
and sisters but by the people of all faiths around the world where homes
are decorated with lights, flowers adorn the homes, gifts are exchanged,
and delicacies are served. It is one of the most festive, significant and
spiritual festival of the day which is celebrated worldwide with great
enthusiasm.
The reason it is called the Festival of Lights is that on this day diyas
[small clay lamps] are lit in abundance signifying victory of light over
darkness and good over evil.
I extend my warmest greetings and good wishes to all readers.
May this years celebration strengthen the bonds of goodwill and broth-
erhood between us and further promote mutual understanding. As we
celebrate this day, let us spread the message of love, brotherhood and
peace. May this Diwali be an occasion to bring the light of happiness
and joy into the lives of all.
I take this opportunity to congratulate all members of the Indo-Caribbean
Cultural Centre for their dedication towards this publication.

Shubh Diwali

flowers in their hair. It is the oldest
