Beyond-the-Basic Productivity Tools (BBPT)
The social studies standard being addressed asks that students be able to describe the lives and
contributions of historical figures in Georgia History. Instead of the teacher directly presenting this
information to the students, this lesson plan will instead ask each student to become an expert on one of
these historical figures. The teacher will begin the lesson by teaching the students about a specific historical
figure and asking the class to help her to create a timeline using the timeline tool on the active board.
Together, the teacher and students will create an example timeline for what the students will be creating on
their own. Students will do research on a figure selected from a list of options by reading literature, and
looking at provided web links to informational websites or videos. They will then apply what they have
learned, decide which events in their figures lives are most important, and make a timeline about their
chosen historical figure using the Timeline tool. They will be required to place at least 8 events on the
timeline, provide an image for at least 6 events, and provide a 1-2 sentence description describing each event
and/or its significance.
Finally, students will be given time to share their work. The class will be divided into two groups, (or more
based on how many tablets and/or computers are available to the class). One group will be set-up with their
completed timeline, while the next group will walk around to each classmate and listen to each students
presentation on their historical figure. After, the groups will; switch. During this time, the teachers will be
walking around the classroom just making sure everything is running smoothly or prompting students that
appear to be struggling. In total, the activity will take about 4 hours. For example, first the teacher will spend
about 45 minutes presenting and creating a timeline with the entire class, next students will spend about 45
minutes researching their figure, the next day they will spend about 45 minutes creating their timeline, and
the last day they will present their historical figure to their classmates. Finally, to conclude the lesson, the
teacher will ask students to volunteer information that they learned from their classmates about other
historical figures.
The teacher will assess the students in three ways: on the timeline the students created, on their
participation and effort during the presentations, and finally on the information they retained from listening
to the presentations of other students. For the timeline, the teacher could print out the timelines, and leave
constructive feedback on what each student did well or on what they could have added to make it better. On
the presentation, the teacher will provide feedback throughout the activity by providing encouragement or
prompting something the students are forgetting. In addition, the students will receive a final grade that is
based on their timeline, their presentation, and their participation in all aspects of the lesson.
