Biochemistry-Introduction and importance and its role in agriculture. Plant cell, cell wall. Bio-
molecules, structure, properties and applications: amino acids, peptides and proteins-plant proteins
and their quality. Enzymes-factors affecting the activity, classification and other industrial
applications. Lipids-acyl-lipids, their industrial applications in soaps, detergents, paints, varnishes,
lubricants, nylon, bio-diesel, bio-degradable plastics, etc. Carbohydrates: nucleosides, nucleotides,
and nucleic acids. Metabolic energy and its generation-metabolism- basic concepts, glycolysis, citric
acid cycle, pentose phosphate pathway, oxidative phosphorylation, fatty acid oxidation. General
reactions of amino acid degradation. Biosynthesis- carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids.
Metabolic regulation. Secondary metabolites, terpenoids, alkaloids, phenolics and their applications
in food and pharmaceutical industries.
Practical: Spot test for carbohydrates, Estimation of reducing sugars by Benedict's Method, Spot
tests for Amino acids, Protein estimation by Lowrys method, protein denaturation- heat, pH,
precipitation of proteins with heavy metals, Paper chromatography for the separation of sugars,
Characterization of lipids by TLC, paper electrophoresis for the separation of plant pigments.
