DELAY BAND FIRST BOOK of PRACTICAL STUDIES for CLARINET by NILO W. HOVEY Re 4 ae Foreword Exercises and studies contained in this book have been written for the specific pur- pose of bridging the gap between any one of a large number of good elementary methods now available, and the intermediate, secondary, or advanced methods and studies which may be obtained. The book isin no way intended to serve as a method or as a course of progressive instruction for the Clarinet, The material may be divided into two general classifications: 1. The “Preliminary Exercises” consist of indispensable scale, chord, and interval work which should be used as daily rowtine. These exercises may be made easy or mod- rately dificult, depending on the needs of the pupil and the tempo demanded by the instructor. If the pupil is deficient in rapid tongueing, the preliminary scales and chords should be practiced detached; if the need for smoothness and precise finger action is ap- parent, the exercises should be played in a connected manner. Correct fingering should be ‘demanded at al mes. The need fora thorough foundation on these fundamentals may be ‘brought to the attention of the pupil by the technical demands of almost any worthw solo or band or orchestral composition IL. The purpose of the "Etudes" is to develop tone, musical style and interpretation, and the ability to read the common rhythmic figures and combinations at sight. THIS BOOK DOES NOT CONTAIN ONE SIXTEENTH NOTE, but the pupil who has a thorough understanding of the rhythms in the book will subsequently play the more complicated rhythms with accuracy and precision. In playing these Etudes, then, the stress is definitely not on technique. The first Etude in each new key is very easy, thus enabling, the pupil to establish the tonality of the new key and to understand the new fingering required. ‘This book may be used successfully for group instruction or for section rehearsals. Unison playing affords an opportunity to check intonation carefully. Fifteen of the Etudes are written in two octaves, These may be identified by the number of the Etude which is inclosed in a square: When a number of Clarinets are involved, part will play the first half and part the second half which is an octave higher or lower. This device may be used to check intonation in ‘octaves and to teach the pupils to “hear” a perfect octave and to “favor” eertain notes which may not be accurate on their particular instrument. This book may also be used for try-outs or to compare the progress of a number of players within the section. a\t PRELIMINARY EXERCISES IN C MAJOR A — MECHANISM (Wok for refer aon nd mots ert he ner ge fh ef wy) ks fingers of ht hand tr 3.0 A SCATE EXERCISE (also detached) D—EXERCISE IN THIRDS (also detached) E—A CHORD EXERCISE (also detached) " I ner Conyieht 1943 by BELWIN, tne, 3X.
