Emilio Ambasz

Born in Argentina in 1943, he graduated at Princeton University (Completed the undergraduate

program in one year, and following year, he earned a Master's Degree in Architecture) and at the
age of 27 was already Curator of Design at the New York Museum of Modern Art, where in 1971
he organized the historic exhibition on Italian design "Italy: The New Domestic Landscape". This
exhibition showed his ability as a lively cultural promoter and revealed his profund understanding
of industrial products.
Among these was "Vertebra", the famous series of seat for the office, for which he was presented
with many international
Ambasz is responsible in the design field for the inventions of a completely autonomus form of
planning: new product are designed in global manner including the design of the engineering and
machinery necessary for production.
Ambasz has used this formula planning many other products for furnishing and lighting.
Having put a personal poetics of lightness into practice in a series of interiors, he gradually came
to be an advocator of a closer bond between nature and artifice.
This was paticulary true in a series of projects of buildings which are partially or completely
buried and upon which and around which the natural environment flourishes: examples of these
are the Mycal Cultural Center in Shin-Sanda in Japan, a residence and private art gallery in
Montana, USA, and the Prefectural International Hall in Fukuoka in Japan.
In recognition of his singular creative talent, numerous exhibitions, have been dedicated to him at
important institutions, from the New York Museum of Modern Art ("Emilio Ambasz:
Architecture",1989) to the Milan Triennal (personal architecture and design show, 1995).

Fukuoka, Japan, was in need of a new government

office building and the only available site was a large
two-block park that also happened to be the last
remaining green space in the city center. Ambasz was
awarded the commission for successfully achieving
reconciliation between these two opposing aims:
maintaining the green space of the existing park while
providing the city of Fukuoka with a multi-use,
symbolically decisive building. Under the building's
fourteen one-story terraces lie more than one million
square feet of space, containing an exhibition hall,
museum, 2000-seat proscenium theater, conference
facilities, 600,000 square feet of government and
private offices, as well as large underground parking
and retail spaces.
