Exponential, Logarithm and General Powers

1. (20%) Find ef (z) in Cartesian form if z = x + yi and f (z) equals
(a) z;
(b) z 2 ;
(c) 1/z.
2. (20%) Find the principal value of:
(a) ln(ei);

(b) (3 + 4i) 3 ;
(c) (1 + i)(1i) .

Cauchy-Riemann Equations
3. (20%) Are the following functions analytic? Use Cauchy-Riemann Equations.
(a) f (z) = iz z;
(b) f (z) = Re(z 2 ) iIm(z 2 );
(c) f (z) = ex (cos y + i sin y).

Laplaces Equation
4. (20%) Are the following functions harmonics? Use Laplaces Equation. If yes, find a
corresponding analytic function f (z) = u(x, y) + iv(x, y).
(a) u(x, y) = ln |z|;
(b) u(x, y) = e2x sin(2y).

5. (20%) Determine a and b such that u(x, y) = ax2 +by 2 is harmonic and find a conjugate
harmonic v(x, y).
