Course guidelines for Shop/Laboratory under Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering courses

Grading system is as simple as can be: Shop Activity is divided into two parts; PRACTICAL WORK and
REPORT WORK. Percentage passing is set @ 70%.

PRACTICAL WORK requires the student to achieve the following criteria:

a) Exactness of dimensional constraints to the given dimensions as illustrated in the whiteboard

b) Neatness and smoothness of finish (no burrs/ loose or broken parts
c) Submission of finished work in time with the proper credentials for each group

REPORT WORK requires the following criteria:

a) All reports are strictly hand-written and made using the proper engineering lettering format;
2/4/4 mm engineering template to be used, and slanted 75 degrees to the right using proper
strokes relevant to techniques learned during the previous DRAWING CLASS.
b) Usage of blue-colored ink pens for alphanumeric characters and punctuation marks
c) Using a 2/4/4 mm template to properly write the report
d) Using black ink to finalize all drawing lines, underlines, borders, arrow lines, arrowheads, curves,
circles, pertaining to mechanical drawings
e) Making the correct format for the title page, including specific sections which require all-capitals
and standard sizing for letters
f) Having the following content within the report:
1. OBJECTIVES. As listed in the lab manual or given by the professor
2. METHODS/DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS. This pertains to the TITLE of each report, where
the student is required to do further research on the particular TITLE as the subject
matter, includes the historical background, terms of usage and also examples (if
any) where it is utilized by the industry
3. TOOLS/MATERIAL/EQUIPMENT. This pertains to the list of ACTUAL TOOLS and
EQUIPMENT used, as well as SPECIFIC MATERIAL/S and their corresponding initial
dimensions (LxWxH) for the raw material/s
4. MECHANICAL DRAWINGS. The drawings for the report must be hand-made, using
proper drawing tools and equipment (pencils, erasers, rulers, templates, French
curves which were previously used in DRAWING CLASS) and finalized by using black
ink. Labels for dimensions should likewise be written by hand, using proper
engineering lettering format in a 2/4/4 mm template slanted to the right @75
degrees. Black ink will also be utilized for dimensional constraints/lines, including
arrowlines, arrowheads. The drawings should also include the TOP VIEW, RIGHT
SIDE VIEW, FRONT VIEW and ISOMETRIC VIEW, all drawn into a suitable scale that
can be conveniently drawn in a bordered letter bond paper, with proper units
derived from the provided example.
5. PROCEDURE. In order to initiate critical thinking and be able to gauge the learnings
achieved by the student while working on the practical shop exercise, the procedure
will be made as technical and as brief as possible, citing all specific dimensions of all
parts assembled and the step-by-step instructions that could be understood by a
non-technical person in order to be effective.
6. TOPIC QUESTIONS. There are ten (10) topic questions pertaining to the particular
shop exercise which needs to be answered, by doing relevant research work out of
books, publications, journals, magazines, official webpages and relevant peer-
reviewed works.
7. CONCLUSION. It is derived from the OBJECTIVES, and it verifies if the objectives
have been fulfilled or have been successfully met during the course of the practical
shop work.
8. RECOMMENDATIONS. This applies to all related recommendations that can be
considered for the particular shop exercise, i.e. improvements, discovery of new
techniques that were not previously discussed but have learned during the course of
making the practical work
9. REFERENCES. These include legitimate sources; books, peer-reviewed publications
or papers, encyclopedias, almanacs, factbooks, official web pages where relevant
data in researching for METHODS/ANALYSIS/DISCUSSION were derived, as well as
obtaining the exact answers to the TOPIC QUESTIONS. These are to be itemized
specifically, and presented using proper formatting as in a BIBLIOGRAPHY;
webpages should also be written using the complete Universal Resource Locator
(URL) and properly cited from legitimate source/s

g) All TITLE PAGE, subtopics and its contents must be enclosed using a border line that is 1 on
the left side and 1 on all other sides, contained in a Letter-sized bond paper (8 x 11) in
PORTRAIT configuration; using handwritten, proper engineering lettering format.
h) All reports are to be submitted ONE WEEK AFTER THE PRACTICAL SHOP WORK, and will be
checked as soon as possible, to be returned to the student and then inserted in a color-specific
clearbook for safe-keeping and maintain the neatness of the report, until such time that all
reports be submitted and compiled as part of their academic requirement for finishing the
subject, which by then should include a summary page of all the grades of shop exercises with
their credentials hand-written, in proper engineering lettering, slanted to the right @ 75
degrees.
i) For the final submission of all clearbook-compiled reports, it is always set ONE WEEK AFTER the
last shop exercise has been performed, so that there will be ample time to address the concerns
for compiling, sorting and making the summary of grades.
j) For verification of GRADES, the student may compute their grades using the following formula:
PRACTICAL WORK PERCENTAGE:

________ SUM OF PRACTICAL WORK SCORE__________x 100 = %

MAXIMUM PRACTICAL SCORE THAT CAN BE OBTAINED

REPORT WORK PERCENTAGE:

_______________SUM OF ALL REPORTS________________ x 100 = %

MAXIMUM REPORT GRADE THAT CAN BE OBTAINED

- Where the passing percentage is set @ 70% with an equivalent grade of 3.0

OVERALL GRADE:

__________PRACTICAL WORK SCORE + REPORT WORK SCORE__________ x 100

SUM OF MAXIMUM PRACTICAL WORK and REPORT WORK
