Read First Before Beginning the Power Supply Testing Procedure
When servicing an LCD TV and you need to Test the Power Supply, due to the symptoms the TV Wont
Come On or
TV Intermittent Powers Off, before beginning the Power Supply Testing READ THE BELOW FIRST.

Check the Front Power Indicator:

This may give some indication as to status of the power supply. If the Power LED is red, it indicates
Stand By voltage is available
Stand-By available. When you press the Power button
button, does the Power LED slowly blink off off.
This should indicate the TV is receiving the power on command and is responding.
Caveat: The Power LED can be turned off via the Customers Menu. If it has been sut off, then the Power
LED cant be used for diagnosis.

The SMPS Must be producing Stand-By voltage when AC is applied. Examine the Voltage Label to see
what the voltage should be. In this TV, Stand-By is 7.8V and when the TV comes on, it jumps up to 18V.
Remember that the Main board and the Front IR/Joy Stick utilizes Stand-By voltage. They could be the
reason if Stand-By isnt coming up.

TV Intermittent Powers Off: When the TV is turned on, bring up the IN-START Menu and go to the
Power On/Off History screen. The top (number 1) indicates the most recent reason the TV turned off.
Look for anything uncommon. Common entries are Off-By: Local_Key, Remote_Key, SW_Update (Not
normal in web-OS models).
Abnormal: Power_Off_By: AC_DET (indicates a loss of AC power).

You can look at almost any Training Manual from the last several years and find the section on In-Start
Menu. A list of Power Off reasons are listed.
You can also look for Article 8860 Power Off Status on TechAssist.com.

TEST 3: (2016 65UH9500) Power Supply Board 18V Power Load Test
In this case, the Power Supply needs to be tested to see if it can supply 18V when loaded.

TEST 3:
3 18V POWER LOAD CHECK
CHECK:

(1) Leave all Jumpers in place on P1001 to P201 of the Power Supply.

(2) Make a 24V load test jig by using a standard 1157 automobile light bulb, (dual element). Solder two wires from the buttons
on the bottom of the bulb
bulb. Do not solder any wire to the actual ground of the bulb
bulb. (See Fig 4)
4).

(3) Testing 18V Line: Attach one end of the Jig to the 18V line from:
(P1001 pins 11, 12 or 14) [P201 SMPS pins 16, 17 or 18.
Fig 4
(4) Attach the other wire from the Jig to Chassis Ground.
Tip: Cut the sharp end of a safety pin off and solder it to
each end of the wires coming from the light bulb Jig. Push one
needle end into any pin 8-15 of CN5 side. Push the other needle
end of the other wire into any pin 1-7 of CN5 or go to Chassis Ground.

(5) Apply

Measure th
the 18V liline tto
confirm its correct. The bulb should be very bright. Let the SMPS run for several
minutes to confirm its operating correctly.
(Do not let wires or light bulb touch any metal parts).
Note: You can also use two single element automotive bulbs (each 6W) tied in series.

a: If the Light Bulb remains lit, the SMPS 18V line is OK.
b: If the SMPS shuts off, Replace the Power Supply.

(6) Testing the 18V(A) Line: You should test the other 18V output from the power supply the same way as above using
different pins; (P1001 pins 9, 10 or 25 28) [P201 SMPS pins 19, 20 or 1 4.

2016 65UH9500 Alternative Power Supply Test and Panel Test
ALTERNATIVE METHOD (without using the two AA Batteries):

For Test 1 Step (A): Use a 10K resistor between Stand By : (P1001 pins 11
Stand-By 11, 12 or 14) [SMPS 16
16, 17 or 18] and
PWR_ON (P1001 pin 15) or [SMPS pin 13].

For Test 2 Step (B): Use a 50K resistor between Stand-By : (P1001 pins 11, 12 or 14) [SMPS 16, 17 or 18] and
DRV_ON (P1001 pin 5) or [SMPS pin 23].

Note: At the top right of the Power Supply there are Test
Points that can also be used for Jumpers and Checks.
See next page for a blow up picture.

PANEL TEST:
If the Main board still functions in relationship to turning on and supplying 12V to the T-CON, when Power is Off, unplug the Vx1 cables
(LVDS). Then turn the TV on. A pattern of Black, White, Gray, Red, Green and Blue should cycle on the screen.

2nd Choice: If you have a 12V supply, you can disconnect the Vx1 Cables, jump 12V to the T-CON fuse, place the SMPS into the Test 2
mode and apply power. Patterns should appear on the panel.
