Introduction to Electronics - PHYS2211

Spring Semester 2017

Assignment #2
Due date: Sunday, February 26th, 2017

Chapter 1. Circuit Analysis (AC)

1. A voltage is given by v(t) = 10 sin(1000t + 30o).

a. Use a cosine function to express v(t).
b. Find the angular frequency, the frequency in hertz, the phase angle, the period and
the rms value.
c. Find the power that this voltage delivers to a 25 resistance.

2. Consider the phasors shown in Figure 1. The frequency of each signal is 200 Hz.
a. Write a time-domain expression for each voltage in the form Vmcos(t+).
b. State the phase relationships between pairs of these phasors.

3. Suppose we have a circuit in which the voltage v1(t) = 10cos(t 30o) V.

Furthermore, the current i1(t) has an rms value of 10A and lags v1(t) by 40o. If the
current and the voltage have the same frequency.
a. Draw a phasor diagram.
b. Write an expression for i1(t) of the form Imcos(t+).

4. A voltage of 30 + j20 V is applied to an impedance of 2 + j5 .

a. Determine the current and the angle at which it lags the voltage.
b. Compute the power in the circuit using I2R and the complex number method.

5. Solve for the following in the circuit in Figure 2:
a. I1, I2, I, total power loss;
b. voltage across parallel part; power loss in each part (two ways);
c. power factor of whole circuit; draw the phasor diagram.

6. It is desired to have 25,000 resistance as the input impedance of a parallel

resonant circuit. A 250 H inductance with 12 of resistance is available for use.
Specify the circuit elements which would make this possible at 3.19 MHz.

7. A series circuit has R = 400 , L = 5 mH, C = 0.2 F. The frequency is 7,960 Hz. What
is the power factor?

8. How would you change the series circuit in Problem 7 to make the power factor
unity without changing the operation frequency? Compute required values.
