ASSEMBLY AND APPLICATION MANUAL

1
INTRODUCTION

This Assembly and Application Manual will provide the

directions and testing steps necessary to build this
practical test tool. By following the assembly steps, the
Logic Probe Kit should work once the 9V battery is
snapped to the clip.

After completing the assembly of the Logic Probe several

testing examples will be illustrated. The intention behind
the applications is to show the versatility and ease of
using this testing tool for digital and microcontroller
circuits. Its suggested the Assembly and Application
Manual be placed in a 3 ring binder and referenced during
the implementation of digital and microcontroller circuit
applications.

ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS:
The steps will guide you through the assembly of the
Logic Probe Kit.

1. Using the circuit schematic diagram in Figure 2

and Reference Designators on the pcb, mount
the 1KΩ and 330 or 470Ω resistors onto the
printed circuit board. See Figure 3

5
2. Place and solder the resistors onto the pcb.

Figure 3. Placement of the 1KΩ and 330/470Ω resistors onto the Logic
Probe pcb

3. Mount the 0.15 or 0.1µF onto the pcb.

See Figure 4

4. Add the 2-14pin DIP sockets to the pcb.

Soldered the sockets onto the printed circuit
board. See Figure 5

Figure 4. The 0.15 or 0.1uF capacitors soldered to the pcb

5. Take the +5V Voltage Regulator IC and soldered

it on the pcb. See Figure 5

Sockets soldered to the pcb

6. Take the 9V Battery clip and soldered it to the

“Pwr-In” circuit pads as shown in Figure 6.

7. Attach the 9V Battery via the snap clip. The 7

Segment LED display should visible show the
letter “L”. See Figure 7

Congratulations, you have successfully built the Logic
Probe Kit. The following examples will illustrate the
versatility and ease in using this practical test tool for
digital and microcontroller circuits.

APPLICATIONS

Logic Controlled DC Motor

The circuit schematic diagram shown below can control a

small dc motor using a Diode AND Gate.

Kit

By removing the dc motor (prevents noise from triggering
the logic probe) and attaching the probe to the cathode
of the LED with respect ground, a Truth Table can easily
be constructed. The output states are easily visible using
the Logic Probe because the “H” (Hi) and “L” (Lo) binary
data is displayed on the seven segment LED Display (MAN
72). After completion of the Truth Table, this document
becomes a diagnostics tool in troubleshooting the simple
dc motor controller.

LEGO NXT Application

If testing the output port of the LEGO NXT is desire,

then here’s a cool way to test it. By modifying a LEGO
Electric cable and using a transistor driver interface, the
Logic Probe kit can be use to validate appropriate motor
control responses. As shown in Figure 9, this circuit
interface along with the Logic Probe kit can provide a
quick “GO-NO-GO” status for the LEGO NXT embedded
software.
