Farmers of Nepal
Elam Project has been working in banana farming value chain for enterprise development and
job creation in eight districts of terai area of Nepal. In 2012 the idea came to produce paper by
using banana stem in project team. The team started to explore information on technologies,
paper making process, machines, and market and business plan on internet. The team found few
practices already initiated in Philippines and Tamilnadu of India but very difficult to go in with
Share 1 technologies and paper making process. On that note, innovation team reached on conclusion to
use Nepali hand-made paper technologies for paper making from banana stem.

One group of potential entrepreneur, enterprise service providers and project staff were sent to a
paper making factory in Surkhet for product development testing of banana paper in close
guidance of paper making technician.
After many trial and error, innovation team were able to produce banana paper from stem.

Expansion opportunity of banana paper making enterprises in Nepal

After successful testing, 60 unemployed people were trained on necessary skills by Elam. Soon
they had 10 enterprises established in Kanchanpur, Kailali, Chitwan, Sarlahi, and Dhanusha
districts. Response from market is very good for product marketing and Nepali media gave good
coverage to disseminate the knowledge through out the country. Now, other development
organizations, private entrepreneurs are showing interest to replicate banana paper making
enterprises in other areas of Nepal.
