CIS 221 The American Disabilities act is a law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities. This includes all areas in public. Under this Act, discrimination against people with disabilities is illegal in employment, transportation, public accommodations, communication and government activities. Examples of areas of public would be such as in jobs, schools, transportation, and private places open to the public. This law is very important because it gives rights to people who need them to help to function in life. To the person with no disabilities, they may not realize the significance of the ADA. It is important to remember that not everyone is able to hear a video, see a text or focus on whats on the page due to a disability. In 1990 Congress passed the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The ADA has five titles. Title II prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities by public entities. Title II is like other civil rights statues in that it ensures equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities, this is very important because it ensures the right to access of public entities for people with disabilities. Examples of types of disabilities include impairment in a persons body structure or function, or mental functioning; examples of impairments include loss of limb, loss of vision or memory loss. Activity limitation, such as difficulty seeing, hearing, walking, or problem solving are all considered disabilities. According to Wikipedia, "Assistive technology is an umbrella term that includes assistive, adaptive, and rehabilitative devices for people with disabilities and includes the process used in selecting, locating, and using them." Assistive technology is any item or type of software that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of persons with disabilities. In 2010, the 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act, was signed into law. This law requires that unedited, full-length programs shown on TV with captions must also be captioned when they are made available online, with more requirements to be phased in at later dates In YouTube, it is easy to add subtitles and captions to videos. This helps mainly with people who cannot hear and may help with people who speak a different language as well. People who may have physical disabilities that need accessibility to use a mouse or type rely on alternate input device. According to technet.com, there is "a large number of input devices are available to users, including keyboard filters, voice-input utilities for controlling the computer with the user's voice, on-screen keyboards, smaller or larger keyboards, eye-gaze pointing devices, and sip-and-puff systems that the user operates by breath control." These are all very helpful tools for people with physical disabilities. For instance, Captioning adds to actability YouTube videos, this is especially important for people with hearing disabilities and need/want to understand what in the videos. Captioning YouTube videos is not a difficult task to do and can be easily managed and added when uploading a video or after the video has been uploaded. One can add specific captions or it can do it automatically. The alt-tag is the captions that show up when you roll the mouse over a picture/graphic on and how it adds accessibility to web pages and Microsoft office documents. The term "ALT tag" is a common shorthand term used to refer to the ALT attribute within in the IMG tag. The ALT tab while combined with other keys helps with various software and functions on the computer to assist with using the keyboard. Some examples of technology software and devises include the Sip and Puff device, the Crx Mouse and the Ghotit Real Writer software. According to W3C recommendation, there are rules to how many flashes a website can contain. Three Flashes or Below Threshold: web pages should not contain anything that flashes more than three times in any one second period. The intent is to reduce the chance of seizures since some people are sensitive to flashing on screens. This includes people with photosensitive epilepsy as well as photosensitive seizure disorders.
