American Disabilities Act Paper

CIS 221
The American Disabilities act is a law that prohibits discrimination against individuals
with disabilities. This includes all areas in public. Under this Act, discrimination against people
with disabilities is illegal in employment, transportation, public accommodations,
communication and government activities.
Examples of areas of public would be such as in jobs, schools, transportation, and
private places open to the public. This law is very important because it gives rights to people
who need them to help to function in life. To the person with no disabilities, they may not
realize the significance of the ADA. It is important to remember that not everyone is able to
hear a video, see a text or focus on whats on the page due to a disability.
In 1990 Congress passed the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The ADA has five
titles. Title II prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities by public entities. Title II
is like other civil rights statues in that it ensures equal opportunity for individuals with
disabilities, this is very important because it ensures the right to access of public entities for
people with disabilities. Examples of types of disabilities include impairment in a persons body
structure or function, or mental functioning; examples of impairments include loss of limb, loss
of vision or memory loss. Activity limitation, such as difficulty seeing, hearing, walking, or
problem solving are all considered disabilities.
According to Wikipedia, "Assistive technology is an umbrella term that includes
assistive, adaptive, and rehabilitative devices for people with disabilities and includes the
process used in selecting, locating, and using them." Assistive technology is any item or type of
software that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of persons
with disabilities.
In 2010, the 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act, was signed into
law. This law requires that unedited, full-length programs shown on TV with captions must also
be captioned when they are made available online, with more requirements to be phased in at
later dates In YouTube, it is easy to add subtitles and captions to videos. This helps mainly with
people who cannot hear and may help with people who speak a different language as well.
People who may have physical disabilities that need accessibility to use a mouse or type
rely on alternate input device. According to technet.com, there is "a large number of input
devices are available to users, including keyboard filters, voice-input utilities for controlling the
computer with the user's voice, on-screen keyboards, smaller or larger keyboards, eye-gaze
pointing devices, and sip-and-puff systems that the user operates by breath control." These
are all very helpful tools for people with physical disabilities.
For instance, Captioning adds to actability YouTube videos, this is especially important
for people with hearing disabilities and need/want to understand what in the videos.
Captioning YouTube videos is not a difficult task to do and can be easily managed and added
when uploading a video or after the video has been uploaded. One can add specific captions or
it can do it automatically.
The alt-tag is the captions that show up when you roll the mouse over a picture/graphic
on and how it adds accessibility to web pages and Microsoft office documents. The term "ALT
tag" is a common shorthand term used to refer to the ALT attribute within in the IMG tag. The
ALT tab while combined with other keys helps with various software and functions on the
computer to assist with using the keyboard.
Some examples of technology software and devises include the Sip and Puff device,
the Crx Mouse and the Ghotit Real Writer software. According to W3C recommendation, there
are rules to how many flashes a website can contain. Three Flashes or Below Threshold: web
pages should not contain anything that flashes more than three times in any one second period.
The intent is to reduce the chance of seizures since some people are sensitive to flashing on
screens. This includes people with photosensitive epilepsy as well as photosensitive seizure
disorders.
The Sip-and-Puff technology that is used by inhaling and exhaling on a straw, tube or
wand is assistive technology used to send signals to a device his device is most commonly used
by people who do not have the use of their hands. CrxMouse helps people use chrome easily by
fully unlocking customizable mouse gestures. This helps with mouse gestures, super-drag,
Wheel Gestures and Rocker Gestures with your fingertips.
Another helpful software is the Ghotit Real Writer. This software helps children and
adults with dyslexia or dysgraphia to write read and correct English text. This application also
helps with very bad spelling for ones who may not be able to spell sufficiently.
