Foster - Lesson Plan #3
Lesson Teacher: Shannon D. Foster Date: 3 October 2017

of time

Content Area: Language Arts and Poetry Group Strategy: Other

Preparing for Lesson Development

1. What does your pre-assessment observation indicate about your students needs, and
current performance and educational needs?
Grade 5 students can have a vast difference in their vocabulary knowledge. Student
vocabulary skills are developing, but some lag behind while others move quickly ahead.
Students need to spend time reading and using vocabulary in different ways. If students
know more descriptive vocabulary, they can create more detailed or active sentences
with vibrant words. With a bit of a push, students at this age can rise to the challenge of
using more vivid words and sentence structure in their writing. Public speaking is scary.
Students need the opportunity to practice speaking in front of a limited audience.

2. How will you design the lesson to meet the needs of all learners in your classroom?
As a large group, students will hear and read Thirteen Moons on Turtles Back by Joseph
Bruchac and Jonathan London for enjoyment. As a class, we will review the structure of a
Cinquain poem and the use of vibrant and detailed words to create depth when writing
poetry. Students will separate into groups of two to reread a selection of text. After
rereading the selection, students will work together to create three lists of words using
vocabulary from their assigned selection. Working together, they will expand their word
to include synonyms they could use in their Cinquain poems. After creating their word
lists, students will work individually to create a Cinquain poem using words from their
newly created lists and reflect on the Cinquain poem writing process. After creating an
original Cinquain, students will regroup with their partner to edit, offer suggestions if
needed, and practice orally reading their poem. Finally, as a larger group, volunteer
students will share their Cinquain poem with the class.
