ROSE HILL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL LIBRAY

Action Plan and Selection of Materials

Emily Bunch, Librarian

Section 4

THE ACTION PLAN

Subject Areas to Improve

Using the data provided in the Needs Assessment, it was determined that deficiencies existed in
the following areas:

Fairy Tales. Approximately 15% of teachers reported that this area of the library did not
fit their needs.

Biography. Approximately 15% of teachers reported that this area of the library did not
fit their needs.

While there are other areas where needs were identified, they are secondary to the curriculum
requirements met by these two sections of the library. All students in all grade levels utilize these
two sections of the library in some capacity, whether it be curriculum driven or simply for
enjoyment.

Justification for Action Plan

Fairy Tales
Third grade students have a rather large unit covering Fairy Tales and Folklore,
as directed by the Commonwealth of Virginia and Fairfax County curriculum.
Updating this section to reflect current literature was imperative, as the section
was in ill-repair and out of date. Further, the 398.2 section did not reflect the
cultural diversity of the school.

Many students enjoy reading books from this section of the library. They
represent stories from our culture and are important to the development of the
literary frame of knowledge for our elementary students.

Biography

Fifth grade students use biographies for two major projects throughout the year.
A biographical research project introduces students to basic research skills and
prepares them for the second major project, the Global Awareness Technology
Project. While engaged in the research on this activity, students may choose to
use biographies of important figures. This section was sadly out of date and did
not reflect a diversity of thought the is consistent with the spirit of the Global
Awareness project.
Books in this section tend to be popular in our library. The section needs to have
books that are accessible to all reading/interest levels.

Objectives Met by Action Plan

Objective: The Rose Hill library strives to create a collection of materials that represent
the cultural diversity of all of our students. Regardless of background or language, our
library collection will allow every student to find information that ignites the spark of
learning.

Fulfillment: By offering updated and culturally relevant sources for our students, the
learning environment will be much more enriching to our student population. The
purchase of new Fairy Tales and Biographies will have far reaching effects, as students
will use these resources as part of the required curriculum.

Selection Process

The following guidelines must be adhered to when making purchases:

Materials must be published by a reputable source.
Print materials must receive a favorable review by a scholarly journal.
*See annotated bibliography below
Materials must meet the objectives of the selection process:
o Fairy Tales mush support curriculum requirements of 3rd grade projects
o Biographies are necessary for all grade levels, but some of the biographies
purchased must support curriculum requirements of 5th grade project
o All materials purchased must reflect the cultural diversity of the student
population
o Materials should be engaging and ignite a spark of learning in the students
A variety of materials should be purchased to meet the needs of all learners, such as
interactive databases, print materials, and interactive electronic books.

Process:
Read the journals listed in the Annotated Bibliography to find suggestions for the
categories of Fairy Tales and Biographies
Make a list of the choices that would appeal to our readers
Ensure that the list represents s a cultural representation of our student population
Ensure that the final list also includes Easy Readers for our ELS student population
Final selections should be delivered in a variety of media, such as print and electronic

Required Resources

District funds pay for the subscription to scholarly journals and access to some scholarly
databases. These resources should all be utilized to create purchasing lists. The librarian will conduct all
research and make the final determination regarding purchases. When purchasing electronic materials,
the librarian should request free trial access to interactive books prior to purchase.
