Grease:

1. Plot Summary: ACT I: The show begins with the singing of Rydell High Schools
Alma Mater song, only to be crudely parodied by the T-Birds (or referred to in the
script as the Burger Palace Boys???) and the Pink Ladies. Its the first day of
senior year and the Pink Ladies sit with new girl Sandy Dumbroski and listen to
her talk about her summer love with Danny Zuko, head of the T-Birds. Danny
does the same to the boys, but in a much different way. The two run into each
other at school. Sandy is thrilled but Danny brushes her off to seem cool. Marty,
one of the Pink Ladies, is having a slumber party where she describes her long-
distance romance with a Marine. The same night, the boys are fixing up a new car
for Kenickie, which he brags about. Danny sees Sandy at cheer practice and tells
her he is going to join track to appear more sophisticated. Rizzo, bad girl of the
Pink Ladies and Kenickies girlfriend, teases Danny for loving such a proper,
virginal girl. Sandy comes in and hears them making fun of her and gets upset
with Danny, who pretends to shrug it off.
ACT II: Its prom night and everyone is having fun at the dance, except Sandy
who is crying because she misses Danny. Kenickie shows up to prom with Cha-
Cha DiGregorio, a different high school, but ditches her to dance with Rizzo,
leaving Danny to dance with Cha-Cha during the dance contest. The two win, but
it is discovered that Cha-Cha is a girlfriend of someone in a rival gang. This
rival challenges the T-Birds to a rumble. Frenchy, a member of the Pink Ladies,
dropped out of high school to go to beauty school but fails out of that, too. The T-
Birds, minus Danny because of his track obligations, show up for the rumble but
the other gang does not. Danny takes Sandy to a drive-in movie and tries to get
intimate with her but she gets offended and leaves. Sandy is at a party with the
greasers, minus Danny, and Rizzo reveals she is pregnant but it is not Kenickies
baby. Her friends offer her comfort but she rejects them. Sandy tries to help Rizzo
but she is reluctant. It is then that Sandy knows what she has to do to fit in. The
next day, everyone is hanging out at The Burger Palace when a transformed
Sandy comes in and impresses Danny with her new greaser look. Rizzo finds out
she isnt pregnant and her and Kenickie get back together. YAY!

Style: campy, parody, musical, 50s influence

a. Dance: lots of opportunity for dancers, male and female; a lot ensemble
dancing

art team to delve into the 50s cliches
c. Costuming: classic 50s, poodle skirts, leather jackets, jeans, etc.
d. Music: upbeat, fun, funky, recognizable hits.

2. Musical Numbers
Summer Nights: one of the most well-known songs ever; could be
between full ensemble, not just the Pink Ladies and T-Birds
Those Magic Changes: opportunity for male ensemble member to show
off his vocals, includes some ensemble
Born to Hand Jive: one of the most upbeat songs in the show, full cast
participation, so much fun
Beauty School Dropout: funny number featuring an ensemble member as a
lead vocalist and could feature the full cast
All Choked Up: song that is not in the movie that replaces Youre the One
that I Want. YOURE THE ONE THAT I WANT IS NOT IN THE
MUSICAL.
We Go Together: another famous hit from the movie that everyone knows,
so much fun.

5. Pros: This show is SO MUCH FUN and so well-known! Very popular among
young crowds and college students. A lot of opportunity for choreography and
ensemble stage time. A lot of opportunities for singers. The costuming and
locations could be a lot of fun for the art team, as most period pieces are.
6. Cons: The musical is much different than the movie and the audience will come in
expecting the movie version. YOURE THE ONE THAT I WANT IS
ARGUABLY THE BEST SONG IN THE MOVIE AND IT IS NOT INCLUDED
IN THE MOVIE SO, THAT SUCKS. It is a very high school show and I feel
like it is part of FYPs mission to do shows that you wouldnt normally do in high
school or do them differently than one might do in high school and it is hard to be
innovative with a show like this. It doesnt prove too much of a challenge to our
org. There is not really an opportunity for us to push the envelope or grow.
