understanding the number of sides each shape has (The

2. The children will (Demonstrating Literacy and Math
Behaviours: 20.5) investigate and describe how objects can be
collected, grouped and organized according to similarities and
differences, as they classify materials and toys in the classroom
and compare them to traditional shapes (The Kindergarten
Program, 2016, pg.178).
3. The children will (Demonstrating Literacy and Math
Behaviours: 11.6) use prior knowledge to make connections to
help them understand a diverse range of materials. Children will
accomplish this through making connections between
traditional shapes and comparing them to everyday
surroundings. For example: My house is the shape of a square
(The Kindergarten Program, 2016, pg.209).

Teaching Strategies

1. Invitations: I will invite the children over to my table by

saying Does anyone want to play a shape game with me?
This will encourage the children to become curious and want to
engage in my game experience with me.
2. Modelling: I will model to the children how to classify an
everyday object with my shape category by finding my own toy
within the classroom, and explaining to them what shape it is
and which category it belongs in.
