1 GENERAL
The short-circuit relay FIS2 monitors the current in a 3-phase network. It is equipped with 2 limit value
relays, whose actuation values can be set independently of each other in the range 0.2A - 20A for the
5A version and 0.04A - 4A for the 1A version. A separate delay time can be set for each limit value.
The switching characteristics of the limit value relays can be set to rising or falling (normally excited or
normally not excited) and for the detection of over-current or under-current.
The current measurement is performed by current converters. The current measurement circuits are
galvanically insulated from each other and from the measurement electronics.
Suitable current converters must be provided for adaptation to the measurement circuits. The auxiliary
voltage and the Enable input are galvanically insulated from the measurement circuits.
Special feature: Limit value 1 can work as a current-controlled delayed overload actuator. This
characteristic is based on the thermal overload actuation of motor protection switches. The FIS2 fulfils
the requirements of VDE 0108 with 110 % nominal current within a 12-hour interval. This current-
controlled overload actuation function can be switched off.
(Note: See connection instructions on Page 16)
The device parameters are set with the aid of a PC configuration tool, with which the settings can be
programmed into the device.
2 WORKING PRINCIPLE
The two available switching stages limit value 1 and limit value 2 are each equipped with a relay with a
closer contact.
Switching stage 1 is also equipped with an external Enable connection.
The relay function (normally excited or normally not excited) can be set separately for both switching
stages in the configuration tool.
The switching characteristics Over-current detection or Under-current detection can also be set in
the configuration tool.
Note: Relay 2 can always work as an over-current or under-current relay.
If current-controlled overload actuation is selected for Relay 1, the relay basically
works with the function over-current detection.
2.2 ACTUATION DELAY
The actuation delay can be pre-selected for each switching stage in the range from 0.1 sec. to 100
sec.
The setting is carried out in 1/10 sec. steps in the configuration tool.
The function of limit value relay 1 is activated by the Enable input (terminal 3).
If the function is not enabled, Relay 1 remains in the specified rest position.
A closed enable input (to earth) is indicated by the yellow LED (Enable).
Limit value relay 1 can work as a current-controlled overload actuator with the characteristics of a
thermal motor protection switch. The current-controlled overload actuation is set in the configuration
tool.
If the current-controlled overload actuation is activated, limit value relay 1 works as an over-current
relay to a I * t performance curve. The measured current level is integrated over the time, and the
relay actuated without delay on reaching the overload range.

Time t [s]
The FIS2 fulfils the requirements of VDE 0108, according to which 110 % of the nominal current may
only be supplied for a maximum of 60 minutes within a 12-hour interval. The FIS2 integrates the
current values for the past 12 hours, and actuates limit value relay 1 on reaching 60 minutes at 110 %
nominal current. This requires the selection of the thermally delayed actuation characteristics and
enablement of the function by means of the Enable input.
These values will be deleted when the auxiliary voltage is switched off!
4 DEVICE CONFIGURATION
- Hardware preparation:
The FIS2 must be connected to the COM port of the PC using a special programming cable
(Order No. KC0034).
To connect the cable to the programming plug of the FIS2, the front panel of the device must
be removed.
Position of the programming plug in the device (after removal of the front panel):
Gnd
Programming plug
Programmierstecker
- Programme start:
The programme can be started after making the connection to the PC.
Since the devices to be programmed are normally assigned by the user to projects or systems, the
configuration tool has a project-based layout:
In order to be able to enter data for the FIS2, the user must first create a new project under
which the device to be programmed will be administered, or open an existing project:
- select PROJECT
1. The necessary information for the project data must be entered in the menu sub-
items.
2. Create project: i.e. enter the file name and the file path.
The values set here are used as the information for creating new
projects.
The corresponding menu sub-item must be selected in order to enter the data.
Entry of FIS2 actuation values FIS2 (limit values)
The values for both switching stages must be entered or selected in this sub-menu for
the following parameters:
In this sub-menu, the user must enter the nominal current of the system into which the
device is to be installed, and specify or select the frequency of the system.
The data entered will be saved on closing this sub-menu window.
In this sub-menu, the user must specify the converter characteristics of the system.
In this sub-menu, the user must enter the form data for the header texts for the
printout of the project data:
In this sub-menu, the user must enter the specified values foe the project data:
Project name Configuration number of the device
Project number Configuration number protection
A new project can be created by selecting this sub-menu, i.e. the user must specify
the data designation and the file path under which this project will be saved.
In this sub-menu, the user can supplement or change the header texts for the current
printout of the project data.
- Selecting this menu item initiates a printout of the project data or the changed device data
described under Point 4.2.2 below.
- select PRINT PROJECT DATA
A print view of the project data appears with the current form data
The printout is started by selecting File / Print
Printout: (Example)
4.2.2 BASIC SETTING AND LIMIT VALUE SETTING OF THE DEVICE
If data are to be set for the current device which vary from the specified values, this
can be done using the menu items:
The following menu item controls the data transmission to / from the FIS2.
4.2.3.1 SETTINGS
The port used and the baud rate must be selected in this menu item.
4.2.3.2 SEND PROJECT
On starting this menu item, the set basic values and the limit values will be transmitted
to the connected FIS2.
The set values are read back out of the connected FIS2 and saved under the current
project.
