SUBJECT I: Functional Writing- Article (50 Points)

Write an ARTICLE for a newspaper addressing the issue of superficial dreams and aspirations when choosing
a career path, starting from the views presented in the text below.

Not All That Glitters Is Gold

There are many situations perfectly illustrating the fact that not all that glitters is gold. For instance, many
advertisements that are part of our daily life, are trying to sell golden products which usually turn out to be
of the poorest quality. Many things may superficially appear very attractive. When they are examined from
close quarters they prove to be disappointing. One cannot judge the quality of a thing or a situation by seeing
its exterior portion only. Very often things are not what they seem to be.
The same goes for finding the right university or college in the pursuit of a future career. We often form our
opinion about things on the basic of superficial impressions. One should always try to find out the true nature
of things. We should try to find out the reality hidden behind their glittering faade. So what is a high school
graduate supposed to do?
( Write your article in 220-250 words)

SUBJECT II: Opinion Essay (50 Points)

Read the text below and then write an ESSAY in which you express your opinion on the role of
women in politics and in society:
As Hugo Young wrote in his biography of Thatcher: "What is certainly not disputable is the
reluctance of this controlled and controlling woman to treat women, politically, as any different from
men. She was against this on principle, apparently seeing nothing in her own rise to power which
might prompt her to single women out for special attention women as a separate category of
voters were not of special interest." This trait was a source of constant irritation to those women who
had received the news of a "sister's" elevation to the office of PM with admiration and delight, only
to discover she had a blind spot. She seemed incapable of recognising how few of her fellows could
command the reliable domestic support system she took for granted.

(The Guardian -What did Margaret Thatcher do for women? by Jenni Murray)
