Assessment Fall2016

The course total (numerical) score, from which we deduce the course letter grade, is calculated as a weighted
average of the Mid-Term Exam score, Final Exam score, and Problem Set scores, as well as an Instructor
Discretionary score:

Final Exam: 40%.

Mid-Term Exam: 25%.

Problem Sets: 30% (6% for each Problem Set).

Instructor Discretionary: 5%.

Problem Sets received by 9:40am in 3-270 on the designated due date receive full earned credit. Problem
Sets received by 10:55am in 3-270 on the designated due date will receive 80% of earned credit. Problem
Sets received after 10:55am of the designated due date will receive no credit. There is one exception to
these rules: for any one, and only one, of the five Problem Sets, you will receive full credit for a submission
(to Professor Patera in Room 3-266) any time before noon on the Wednesday of the week of the designated
due date.

Each Problem Set comprises Practice Problems, not to be submitted, and Graded Problems, to be sub-
mitted. Practice Problems, often more open-ended, are intended to promote discussion and assimilation.
Graded Problems, in the style of exam questions, are intended to focus your study and assess your knowl-
edge and skills. You may discuss both Practice Problems and Graded Problems, but the solutions you
hand in must be entirely your own work, and not transcribed from another source.

The exams are open-book and open-notes: you may bring any hardcopy material you wish to the exams.
You should also bring a calculator to the exams, however phones, tablets, and computers are not permitted
during exams and must be turned off and stowed.
