rolled and cold drawn steels :1008 ,1018, 1030 and 1040.

Table 1:

Percentage Elongation and Brinell hardness of Hot rolled and cold

drawn type of various steels sample:

AISI steels Process of Percentage Brinell Hardness

manufacturing Elongation(%) (HRB)
1008 Cold rolled 20 95
Hot rolled 30 86
1018 Cold drawn 15 126
Hot drawn 25 116
1030 Cold drawn 12 149
Hot rolled 20 137
1040 Cold drawn 12 170
Hot rolled 18 149
CONCLUSION:
There were two Sections involved in the metallography of cold drawn
steel that were longitudinal section and transverse section.
Metallography is basically a study of microstructure of both metals and
alloys. There were no difference found in the microstructure of both
longitudinal section and transverse section , both possessed even-sized,
equiaxed grain structure . The reason behind this is that the process of
Hot rolling is occur above the recrystallization temperature due to
which grains after deformation once could regain their original position
again, hence not deformed in any single particular direction .

The grain structure of steel samples were found equiaxed after the
deformation process ,which shows that the grains regain their shapes
after deformation process. This represented the process was hot rolling
which occur above the austenite transformation temperature.

In experiment 1, the steels sample were cold rolled due to which

microstructure of both longitudinal section and transverse section were
not same whereas the grains were found elongated in the direction of
mechanical working in longitudinal section. But the Hot rolled steel was
appear equiaxed whether the section is cut longitudinally or
transversely.

By analyzing the graph, it can be concluded that the figures for

percentage elongation decrease with increase in the figures for Carbon
content in a steel. Apart from this, percentage elongation is higher in
hot rolled steel than cold rolled steel. Moreover, the stats for Brinell
hardness increased with increase in the stats for carbon content in a
steel. It is interesting to note that the brinell hardness is higher in cold
rolled steel than hot rolled steel.
