DOWNLOAD TUTORIALS

This class requires 3 software components, all of which you can install on your
computer / laptop for ease of use outside of the University:

MySQL Server (community edition)
MySQL Workbench (for ER modeling)
HeidiSQL (for querying)

This short guide will walk you through the installation of each of these components.

MySQL Server Download Tutorial (Windows)

Step 1:
Download the MySQL community Edition (Based on your OS)
https://dev.mysql.com/downloads/mysql/

Step 2:
Double click the file and begin the install process

Step 3:
Follow all prompts throughout installation

Step 4:
Open MySQL Workbench. Click the Database drop box and select Query

Step 5:
Store your password and click okay. You should be fully connected to your local
database!




MySQL Server Download Tutorial (Mac)

Step 1:
Go to https://dev.mysql.com/downloads/mysql/

Step 2:
Choose your operating system from the roll-down menu, and click download
(should be 200-300Mb). Those of you with Mac OS, download DMG not Tar, and be
sure to check whether your device is 32 or 64 bit.

You can do this by going to About this Mac then More info

Step 3:
Click no thanks, just start my download

Step 4:
Run MySQL Community Server

Step 5:
Installer should come up, go through the steps and install. When installed, the popup
below should appear. Note the temporary password before you continue




Step 7:
3. Start the server using the commands found on this page:

Step 8:
Use MySQL Workbench to connect to your local instance. You will be
asked to change your temporary password upon first login.



MySQL Workbench Tutorial

Step 1:
Go to https://www.mysql.com/products/workbench/

Step 2:
Click on Download now under MySQL Workbench 6.3

Step 3:
Scroll down to the bottom of the screen, choose your operating system and click
download

Step 4:
Do not worry about making an account or signing in, just click no thanks, just start
my download

Step 5:
Run MySQLWorkbench and connect to your local MySQL Server Instance, give it a
name and put in your password. Double click the connection and you can now
manage your server!



HeidiSQL Download Tutorial

Note: HeidiSQL is designed to run on Windows. Mac users will need to run Windows
via virtualization (Parallels, VMWare, VirtualBox, etc) or Boot Camp. Most query
tasks in the class can also be accomplished using MySQL Workbench, so in that
sense HeidiSQL is not required.

Step 1:
Go to http://www.heidisql.com/

Step 2:
Click on the downloads tab and click Installer. It should automatically install once
clicked

Step 3:
When opened, you should see this screen. Type in your password, name your
session, and open



Step 5:
You should now be connected to your database!
