CEBU CITY, Philippines A female lawyer was killed
while her law partner and office staff were wounded
when they were ambushed by still unidentified men in
Barangay Looc, Mandaue City, Cebu, past 6 p.m. on
Thursday.
SPO2 Juan Calamba, desk officer of the Mandaue City
Police Station 5, identified the fatality as Amelie Ocaada
Alegre, 35. Wounded were her law partner, Briccio
Boholst and an office staff, Antonio Pino who were both
recuperating at the University of Cebu Medical Center in
Mandaue. Boholst is a former Integrated Bar of the
Philippines-Cebu City president and Mandaue city
administrator. Alegre died on the spot due to multiple
gunshot wounds in the body. Boholst was hit in the leg
and Pino in the stomach. Alegre was driving a grey BMW
car with plate number ABM 5635 after attending a
meeting with Boholst and Pino in Mandaue. She was
supposed to drop off Boholst in Barangay Looc but her
vehicle was fired upon by one of the two men on board
a motorcycle when the car reached Catalino Street in
Barangay Looc, Mandaue. Senior Supt. Mariano Natu-el,
Mandaue City police director, said they were looking into
all angles of the killing. He said they were securing the
testimonies of witnesses and would try to review the
footage of the CCTV installed near the traffic light located
100 meters away from the crime scene.
We cant give any conclusion now, he said. But he said
the police would invite Alegres husband for questioning.
Alegres mother Marieta, who rushed to the crime scene
upon learning of the ambush, said her daughter confided
to her that she had been receiving death threats from her
husband, Ryan Alegre, a businessman. The couple were
sweethearts at the University of San Carlos. They got
married in 2004. But their relationship turned sour four
years after when the victim learned that her husband had
a mistress. Her husband eventually filed a petition to
annul their marriage in court.

MANILA - A Philippine lawyer who specialized in
investigating crimes against the environment has been
ambushed and shot dead, police said Friday.
The murder on Wednesday of Mia Manuelita
Philippines is one of the world's most dangerous places
for environmental campaigners, with more than 100
killed over the past 15 years.
33 environmental activists killed in PH in 2015: report
Four motorcycle-riding gunmen opened fire after
surrounding a van being driven by Mascarinas-Green --
with her children and nanny in the vehicle -- near her
home on the central island of Bohol, the authorities said.
Mascarinas-Green was pronounced dead at a hospital
but her children were unharmed, regional police
spokesman Senior Inspector Reslin Abella told AFP.
"The victim is a known environmental lawyer.
Investigators are checking whether the attack had any
link to the cases she had handled in relation to
environmental issues," Abella told AFP by telephone.
"They now have the identity of at least one of the
perpetrators and a hot pursuit operation is ongoing," she
said without naming the suspect.
Abella said police were at the moment unaware if
Mascarinas-Green had been threatened previously in
relation to her work.
Her children are twins, aged two, and a 10-year-old
daughter, according to local media reports.
Her death brings to 112 the number of environmental
campaigners murdered in the Philippines over the past
15 years, according to Filipino environment monitor
Kalikasan.This includes 12 since President Rodrigo
Duterte took office seven months ago, Kalikasan said.
"Most of these cases remain unresolved as the
government continues to ignore the threat against
environmental defenders," Clemente Bautista, its
national coordinator told AFP.
"What this means is that the perpetrators are
emboldened to do it again and again because no one
ever gets caught."
Greenpeace Southeast Asia executive director Yeb Sano
also said the killing highlighted the culture of impunity in
the Philippines, where powerful figures abuse a corrupt
political and justice system to literally get away with
murder.
"Those who cause environmental destruction are
resorting to savage measures and deplorable acts to stop
communities and people who are standing up to protect
our imperilled environment," Sano said.
Environmental monitor Global Witness separately lists
88 killings of environmental activists and workers in the
Philippines between 2010 and 2015.
The attacks spiked with 33 dead in 2015, ranking the
Philippines as the second most dangerous country in the
world for environmental campaigners behind Brazil.

Lawyer, son killed in Cagayan de Oro

A lawyer and his three-year-old son were killed in a fire
inside their car in Cagayan de Oro City Saturday morning,
a police report said.
Cagayan de Oro police identified the victims as Rey
Bennie Fabre, a lawyer, and his three-year-old son.
An initial report said the incident happened at around 5
a.m. near the city's Neri Compound at Zone 2, Barangay
Bayabas.
According to Rachelle Reyna, a masseuse, she was
fetched by Fabre's woman companion to massage the
lawyer's two sons at home who had fever.
Reyna said, the lawyer and his companions in the car
decided to drop by a drugstore to buy medicines.
But Fabre drove past a drugstore and continued to drive
until they reached Barangay Bayabas where the car got
stuck in the mud, Reyna said, adding that the lawyer
seemed under the influence of liquor.
She got off of the car and called for help. A moment later,
she said she saw the car was already in flames.
On the other hand, the police report said a certain Felix
Trecio and Panfilo Valmoria rushed to help the victims
and smashed open the left-side window of the car in an
attempt to pull out Fabres son, but Fabre shot Valmoria
three times.
Police said Valmoria sustained a gunshot wound in the
shoulder.
Authorities recovered from Fabres car a 9mm handgun,
a cal-.38 pistol, and bladed weapons, the report said.
Investigations into the incident are still ongoing on, the
police said.
Ex-Abra gov's lawyer, 2 others killed in
attacks

CANDON CITY - Three Bangued residents including a
prominent lawyer of deposed Abra Gov. Vicente Valera
were shot dead in three separate gun attacks in the
capital town of Abra.
Cordillera Police Regional Director Eugene Martin said
that police are looking whether the killing of 75-year-old
Demetrio Pre last Saturday was politically motivated.
Pre was killed by an unidentified gunman while he was
talking to two clients identified as Bernardo Banez inside
his law office at Zone 4. Pre was shot in the head with a
caliber .45 pistol.
The case handled by Pre with Banez involved a land
dispute case in Abra but Pre was also a notary public to
most of the cases of the former governor.
Right after Pre was shot, Martin said a municipal hall
guard was also killed by unidentified gunmen.
Efren Barselona, 32, was said to be manning the door of
the Bangued Municipal Hall when the attackers asked
permission to come in supposedly to use the automated
teller machine inside.
But immediately after entering the building, the
assailants shot Barselona. Another guard was spared.
Barselona sustained 14 gunshot wounds from an assault
rifle and died.
The latest incident involved a businesswoman who was
shot dead Monday night on Gomez Street corner
Magallanes Street. Evangeline Valera of Bucloc, Abra, but
already a Bangued resident was shot in the head with a
caliber .38 revolver while she was walking with a woman

Human rights lawyer, driver killed in
Sorsogon

A human rights lawyer and former provincial board
member was shot dead in an ambush in Sorsogon
province in Bicol early Tuesday morning, radio reports
said.
Two unidentified motorcycle-riding men shot dead Gil
Gojol in the early-morning ambush, which occurred
shortly after Gojol attended a court hearing in Gubat
town in Sorsogon province.
Radio station dzRH cited an initial police report indicating
Gojol's driver, identified as Danilo France, was also killed
in the ambush.
The killing took place a day after another activist, Cris
Frivaldo, was shot dead in Irosin town in Sorsogon
Monday afternoon.
Frivaldo was the younger brother of Irosin councilor Max
Frivaldo who was also shot dead by two still-unidentified
gunmen inside his house early this year.
The Frivaldos were both members of the party-list group
Bayan Muna.
Initial reports indicated Gojol's van had passed by a
military detachment along the national highway on its
way to Sorsogon City when the ambush happened.
At the time, a motorcycle and an owner-type jeep gave
chase to Gojol's van, with the men on board the two
vehicles motioning to France to stop the van.
When France refused, the men on the motorcycle drew
cal-.45 pistols and fired repeatedly at the van, killing
France.
Gojol got down and tried to run, but the gunmen fired at
him, hitting him in the buttocks. When he fell, the men
closed in and shot him in the back, killing him instantly.
Police said they are looking into information an Army
captain with whom Gojol crossed paths at a cockfight
derby may have "ordered" the killing.
Another theory involved some groups targeting Gojol's
fellow human rights lawyers, identified as Bert Labitag
and Joven Laura, who had gone ahead of Gojol from the
courtroom Tuesday morning.
Gojol, who was admitted to the Bar in May 1988, was
allied with the "Aksyon Demokratiko" party of the late
former senator and presidential candidate Raul Roco.
He ran for vice governor of Sorsogon under the "Aksyon
Demokratiko" banner in 2004 but lost to Antonio
Escudero.
Following his political defeat, Gojol focused his efforts on
human rights work.
Gojol's murder came a day after international human
rights groups scored the Arroyo government anew about
extrajudicial killings of activists and journalists. -

QC prosecutor shot dead

A government prosecutor was shot dead early
Wednesday morning on Commonwealth Avenue in
Barangay Old Balara in Quezon City, James Agustin
reported for Super Radyo's dzBB.
Lawyer Noel Mingoa was shot in front of Cebu lechon
restaurant along Commonwealth Avenue at 1:20 a.m.
He died on the spot, a separate report on Unang Balita
on Wednesday said.
A witness said Mingoa was talking on his cellphone when
he was shot by a still unidentified male who got off a
black car and fired at the victim at close range.
The same witness said four to five gunshots were heard.
There were more than 14 empty bullet shells found at
the crime scene.
Investigation is ongoing to determine the motive for the

Lawyer shot dead in Tuguegarao City

A prominent lawyer in Tuguegarao City in Cagayan
province was been shot dead, a police official said
Thursday.
Cagayan provincial police director Sr. Supt. Gregorio Lim
identified the victim as Atty. Isagani Garcia.
The 35-year old lawyer was gunned down at 8:28 p.m.
Wednesday, along Bagay Road in San Gabriel,
Tuguegarao City, Lim told GMA News Online in a text
message.
The victim was brought to Saint Paul Hospital but was
declared dead by Dra. Katrina Sumalabe at about 9 p.m.,
he added.
Authorities are investigating the incident to get leads on
the suspect and to determine the motive for the crime,
Lim said.
According to news reports, Garcia was known to be
handling the graft complaints before the Office of the
Ombudsman against former police official and now city
Mayor Jefferson Soriano.
The mayor was back on his post last Monday after a 90-
day suspension for his alleged involvement in a P34-
million helicopter scam.
Soriano was among 22 people, including former First
Gentleman Mike Arroyo, who were charged for the
supposed anomalous purchase of helicopters for the
Philippine National Police (PNP).
In 2009, Soriano was a member of the PNP Bids and
Awards Committee when the police bought two second-
hand helicopters that were passed off as brand new.
As of posting time, GMA News Online was still trying to
contact the Tuguegarao City mayor's office for Soriano's
