Date: 25th November 2016

Bulletin Number: 1000010915-PIB Revision: 02

Handling Tools

Subject: Impact of upcoming effectivity of API Specification 7K sixth edition

Product Model: Drilling and Well Servicing Equipment

Effectivity: Equipment as described in API Specification 7K sixth edition, section 1

Affected Assemblies: Handling Tools, not limited to: Rotary tables; Rotary Bushings; Manual
Tongs; Safety clamps not used as hoisting devices; Rotary slips, both manual
and powered; Slip bowls; Spiders, both manual and powered

Objective
To inform the industry of the upcoming effectivity of the API Specification 7K sixth edition and the
impact this has on the affected equipment. This revision contains additional information.

Issue
On December 30, 2016 the API Specification 7K sixth edition will come into effect. Since the impact of
this specification is significant, this bulletin is to make customers aware of this new release.

Impact
All manufacturers supplying equipment according to the API Specification 7K sixth edition will need to
comply with this specification for all equipment delivered after the above mentioned effectivity date. As
a summary the following major changes are:

Requirement for a load rating on all affected assemblies, including load carrying size equipment,
excluding inserts.
Requirement for a design verification test.
Requirement for traceable and qualified material for all primary load bearing components.
Requirement for a production proof load test on specific equipment.
Requirement for inspection according to more stringent criteria.

Customers are urged to acquire, read and understand this new release.

Product Information Bulletin

For all customers it is important to know the impact this has on existing and new equipment:

As of the effectivity date, NOV will quote and supply equipment complying with API Specification 7K
sixth edition as a standard. API Specification 7K fifth edition equipment will be quoted on customers
request only.
For equipment ordered prior to or after the effectivity date customers will need to consider and
clearly define which API 7K Specification (sixth or fifth) Edition is required.
Equipment in the field can still be used as is.

NOV has been and will be continuing to develop and test equipment to meet or exceed API
specifications.

There may be a lot of questions on this change:

Why has the API Specification 7K been revised in this manner?

The field has indicated for many years that there is a need to have more clarity on the working
capabilities and rating of rig floor equipment. This has been suggested to the API 7K steering committee
and work groups to change the requirements in this manner.

What is the impact on equipment already in the field?

All equipment currently in the field is manufactured to API Specification 7K 5th edition or older. This
equipment can still be used as is after December 30, 2016.

Is retroactive upgrade of the affected equipment possible?

No, equipment in the field may have a different material specification, may not have a load rating, may
not have been proof load tested and/or may not have been design verification tested. Retroactive
upgrade to meet the API Specification 7K sixth edition is not possible.

Will newly purchased products be re-rated?

Some equipment which did have a load rating will be re-rated due to the higher design safety factor
and/or changed calculation criteria.

In addition, some equipment which had no load rating will now be rated.

2
Product Information Bulletin

Will NOV quote and supply only as per API Specification 7K sixth edition?

No, NOV will continue to offer/supply equipment manufactured to both the fifth & sixth edition
NOV will as a standard quote per sixth edition.
Quote to fifth edition on customer request only.
Fifth edition equipment manufactured after 30 December 2016 can no longer be API
monogrammed.
There will be a price difference between the two specification levels.

How will NOV inform customers of changes?

NOV will actively plan and organize customer meetings to further explain the changes and the impact
these have. Please do not hesitate to contact NOV to ask for a meeting or more information.

Information as it becomes available will be advised via the Product Information Bulletin system (PIB).

What will happen to orders in backlog scheduled beyond 30 December 2016?

Many project orders include the following products, our advice:

Rotary Table adapters: orders will be updated to reflect the new sixth edition part nos (no price
impact)
Power Slips, discussion with customer required in view of re- rating
Rotary Slips and Bushings: we will suggest to replace any of these items with the alternative rated
equivalent

Will it have an effect on the cost price?

With the additional requirements equipment will have to be manufactured and tested to a higher
quality level, involving a higher material cost and more stringent inspection and testing requirements,
thereby increasing the manufacturing cost.

Will the sales price be increased?

NOV will try to limit the increase this has on the equipment sales price as much as possible, but increase
on some equipment is to be expected.

Is equipment manufactured as per API Specification 7K fifth edition interchangeable with new
equipment manufactured to API Specification 7K sixth edition?

3
Product Information Bulletin

Ideally it will not be possible to mix load bearing components of previous edition equipment with sixth
edition equipment. Where possible NOV will change the design to prevent inadvertent mixing of
components. However, there will be equipment where this is not possible. As such, the possibility exists
to use sixth edition components in prior edition equipment or vice versa. Customer should realize that
the overall qualification and performance level is determined by the lesser component of the
equipment.

NOV will provide cross over list with fifth and sixth edition affected part numbers for identification in the
field.

Does this new API Specification 7K sixth edition have an effect on the European Directives like CE
Machinery Directive and ATEX?

No, all equipment manufactured or brought into the European Market must continue to comply with
these European Directives. All API supplied equipment will need to comply with these Directives.
