The Impact of Positive and Negative Word of Mouth on Brand

Abstract
We present evidence from 13 studies on the relative impact of positive and negative word of mouth (PWOM and NWOM) on brand decisions. Contrary to
common expectation, our Lndings indicate that, on average, the impacts of PWOM and NWOM are much the same but we Lnd wide variation by
category. We do not Lnd that impact is related to the relative rarity of PWOM and NWOM. We do Lnd that when PWOM has high inMuence in a category,
NWOM also has high inMuence. However, our measure of impact might be improved. We argue that, when account is taken of the prior probability of
brand selection in categories with many brands, NWOM may have less impact on brand choice than PWOM.

positive, with a share of two thirds reported by Godes and Mayzlin (2004),
and nearly three quarters documented by Chevalier and Mayzlin (2006).
These 3ndings are in line with recent studies in the " ofKine " world (East
