Lesson Plan in English Grade 8 Module 2

Lesson 1: Tracing Our Roots (August 31, 2016)

I. Objectives

A. Students are expected to be able to:

1. identify the meaning of words through visual context

2. find out what Filipino cultures are depicted in the reading text

II. Subject Matter

A. Topic: lntroduction to Thailand, The Land of the Free

B. Materials: PowerPoint presentation

C. Reference: Grade 8 English Module

III. Procedure

A. Preliminary Activities

1. Prayer

2. Checking of attendance

3. Review of the previous lesson

4. Motivation

a. The teacher will give a short introduction about Thailand

b. Presentation of pictures of Thailand's landmarks/attractions

B. Lesson Proper

1. The teacher will ask related questions about the presented photos. The students will formulate
responses to the given questions. Then, the teacher will give additional information about the photos.

2. Vocabulary Building/Unlocking of Difficulty

Before presenting a reading selection, the teacher will show another set of pictures, set of words and
meanings in columns. The students will work on the vocabulary by matching the words and meanings
that describe the given pictures.

3. Reading Selection

Interactive discussion/activity for the reading selection Sawatdee... Hello Beautiful Bangkok by Ethel
Soliven-Timbol.

C. Application

The students will group themselves into four or five and will assign names such as WHO, WHAT, WHERE,
WHY, AND HOW. Each group will construct questions that begin with the name of their group. The
questions will be taken from the selection read, and will be thrown to the group of their choice. Their
performance as a group depends on how well students have responded to the questions asked.

D. Generalization
1. How are we similar/ different from Thais? What do we make of this difference?

IV. Evaluation

A. Answer the following questions:

1. What Filipino traditions and beliefs are practiced by Thais as depicted in the selection?

2. What can you say about the different landmarks in the Thailand being described by the author?

V. Assignment

A. Draw on a short bond paper interesting customs, traditions and culture or even landmarks distinctive
of the country. Be able to explain or discuss your drawing in a three-sentence paragraph.

C. Materials: PowerPoint presentation, wyteboard

III. Procedure

A. Preparatory Activities

4. Motivation

a. Watch a video about aggressive driving

b. Brainstorm about aggressive driving

B. Lesson Proper

1. Class will be divided into five groups, and each group will give read a paragraph assigned to them and
try to share the main idea of the paragraph of the sample essay Aggressive Driving Should Be Avoided.
Simultaneously, there will be interactive discussion between the teacher and the learners.

2. Discussion of the definition, characteristics, and parts of an argumentative essay.

C. Generalization

1. Students will restate the definition, and parts of an argumentative essay, and the context that may
use in supporting writers POV in writing an essay.

IV. Evaluation

A. The students will identify the parts of the essay Aggressive Driving Should Be Avoided by writing the
number of paragraph/s in each part. (Written individually or oral collaboratively)

V. Assignment
A. The students will write an argumentative essay either of the following topics. (The teacher will
elaborate what the following topic mean.)

I. Objectives

A. Students are expected to be able to:

1. complete the lyrics of the song listened, Imagine.

2. interpret the message of the song by painting, sketching, or drawing.

II. Subject Matter

A. Topic: Task 1 What Do You Perceive, Task 2 Listen and Imagine (Imagine by John Lenon).

B. Materials: Audio-visual materials.

C. Reference: Learners Manual pages 144-147.

III. Procedure

A. Preliminary Activities

1. Prayer

2. Checking of attendance

3. Review of the previous topic (Argumentative Essay)

4. Motivation

The teacher will present pictures related to the topic and the learners will ty to guess or describe the
meaning of the picture viewed.

B. Lesson Proper

1. The class will share their ideas about the value of building ties. The learners will listen to the song
Imagine by John Lenon.

C. Application

1. The song will play again, and the student will complete the incomplete lyrics of the song on your
learners manual page 146.

IV. Evaluation

A. Answer the following questions:

1. What does the title mean?

2. What is Lenons vision of peace? Give examples.

3. What is your vision of peace? Is it the same as the authors? Explain.

4. What do you wish for? What are you afraid for?

5. What kind of world will it be if we all live in peace?

V. Assignment

A. With your group, interpret the message of the song through sketch, painting, or drawing.

I. Objectives

A. Students are expected to be able to:

1.identify words associated to human solidarity in the speech Values Education for Human Solidarity

2. develop a paragraph from a line in the text to assess the understanding of the text read.

II. Subject Matter

A. Topic: Task 3 Read to Lead (Values Education for Human Solidarity by Lourdes R. Quisumbing)

B. Materials: Chalkboard, cartolina

C. Reference: Learners Manual pages 147-151

III. Procedure

A. Preliminary Activities

1. Prayer

2. Checking of attendance

3. Review of the previous topic (Imagine by John Lenon)

4. Motivation

The class will have a brainstorming activity by answering the KWL table. (What you Know, What do you
Want to Know, What you Learned)

B. Lesson Proper

1. Unlocking of Difficulties

Students will supply the correct letters to complete the word based on the provided definitions. The first
and last letters are given as clues. The activity is on page 147- 148 of your learners manual.

2. The students will read the speech silently.

3. After reading, the class will discuss the content of the speech.

C. Application

With a partner, the students will list down words/phrases from the speech that may be related to
human solidarity.

IV. Evaluation

From a chosen line in the speech, develop at least five-sentence paragraph expressing affirmation or
negation about it. Deliver it in class afterwards.

V. Assignment

1. What values and qualities must people possess to attain harmony and solidarity? Discuss and write
these values on the slices of pizza.

2. Read the epic Song of Roland. Theres a copy in your LM, pages 152-156

Lesson 2: Building Ties (September 19-20, 2016)

I. Objectives

A. Students are expected to be able to:

1. make sense of information understanding about the epic, The Song of Roland

2. determine the theme of the epic by presenting tabloos

II. Subject Matter

A. Topic: Task 5 R2 Read Roland (The Song of Roland)

B. Materials: Chalkboard, textbook

C. Reference: Learners Manual pages 152-157

III. Procedure

A. Preliminary Activities

1. Prayer

2. Checking of attendance

3. Review of the previous topic (Values Education for Human Solidarity by Lourdes R. Quisumbing)

4. Motivation

The class will brainstorm about the qualities of their ideal heroes must possess by concept mapping

B. Lesson Proper

1. The teacher will introduce what epic is and the origin of the epic The Song of Roland.

2. The students will read the epic silently.

3. After reading, the class will retell the story. The teacher will do the task first, followed by the first
group, continuing the narration to the other groups until done. Once done, the teacher will give his/her
synthesis.

C. Application

With their groups, the students will present tabloos about the theme of the epic.

IV. Evaluation

A. Describe the following characters in the epic:

1. Roland

2. Charlemagne

3. Ganelon

B. Answer the following questions:

1. What are the characteristics of an ideal knight according to the epic?

2. Why was Ganelon very angry to Roland?


3. How do you feel about Roland? Why does he not sound the olifant to call King Charlemagnes army at
the very beginning?

4. How do you feel about King Charlemagne? Is he a wise king? Explain.

5. What causes the death of Roland?

V. Assignment

A. Read about extemporaneous speech on your LM page 159.
