QUESTION NO. 1 (10 marks)

A steel rod having a cross-sectional area of 250 mm and a length of 180m is suspended
vertically from one end. It supports a tensile load of 25kN at the lower end. The unit mass of

steel is 7850 kg/m and E 200 10 3 MPa . Find:


(i) The elongation due to self weight of the bar (4)
(ii) The elongation due to load applied on the bar (4)
(iii) The total elongation of the bar (2)

An aluminum bar having a cross sectional area of 0.6 in carries the axial loads applied at the

positions as shown below. Youngs Modulus (E) of the bar is 10 10 6 psi
