SUBJECT: Assignment 1:2 refection

My purpose is to reflect and try to amend my errors in my research for internships and
Tell me about yourself video. During the process of this assignment I was able to gain some
experience with technology. I had never made or publish a video on YouTube. Most of my
experience with technology is just using Prezi and PowerPoint. I had never been interviewed
and that was also a new experience.
For my research process, I used information sent to me by email. I had received
information about handshake, I created a profile and it linked up with UNM. There I was able to
find the first three internships which I emailed for the 1:1 assignment. In this website I put my
information such as GPA, work experience, what interested me, and education. Although, most
of the internships were filtered to fit what I was looking for, they were for old students. I think I
should have looked in to other websites to help me find more internships. The information
about the internships on handshake was incomplete, I struggled to find the requirements. Also,
on some of their websites to apply they only asked for a resume, there was no other application
needed.
For my word-of-mouth research, I chose to ask Maria Anchondo, she was a tutor at the
CAMP scholarship in which I participate. She is interested in a business major and is currently a
junior at the University of New Mexico. I chose to ask her because while I was in the CAMP
program she sent and told me about internships and always suggested different volunteering
opportunities and suggested classes I should take. She was very helpful and sent me 2
internship opportunities and a website that had different internships, from there I picked the
ones that interested me the most.
I believe the word-of-mouth was more helpful because she has experience with those
internships. Also, the internships she shared with me are well fitted for me because they are
not only for business majors but they also interact with my culture. I think she was able to help
me because she knew me better than the information that I could provide to the website. With
her being my tutor we got to know each other and our interests.
The internships I selected were for business majors, except for the Global Studies. I
believe the HACU would be rated a 5 and Global Studies would also be rated a 5 because they
are the most competitive. I think they are more competitive because they are nationwide
internships. I would rate the other ones a 4 or a 3 because they are more local. BPWC has 10-50
employees which is why I believe it would be like a 3 or 4. For the marketing internship this
assignment is helpful because it requires use of technology. This internship would require me to
assist in updating social media presence, email communications, assist with tracking of website
update projects as needed, assist with graphic design. For the global studies it would entail to
help increase SAFs capacity to train farmworker youth, build advocacy and organize campaigns,
and increase communication, marketing research, and assist with event marketing. Therefore, I
believe this would be the most fun internship but also the most challenging. BPWC is for
students interested in accounting.
My first choice would be the HACU internship. I believe I would be a better candidate
for the BPWC internship because there is no experience required. For the others, I would have
to be a junior or a senior. Some factors that will influence my application decision is location, I
would like to stay close to home. Another thing that will influence my decision is where I would
be able to fit in best due to my personality.
I believe my tone of voice didnt help me, because I am a shy person. It was very difficult
to get out of my comfort zone to share tell me about yourself video. I had only practiced an
interview before for the CAMP scholarship. I believed it sounded a little rehearsed because of
how nervous I was. I was afraid I would forget what I had practiced or leave out important
details. Before making the video, I looked at examples of videos and I one technique I found
that I thought would work was present-past-future. To use this technique, you talk about what
you are currently doing, professionally, next you share your past experiences and the things you
learned there, and finally you state your future goals.
If I could change something from my response it would be the ending, because I didnt
state my goals or why I would be a good candidate for that positon. For my responses I got a 3,
some said that I dresses a little casual. Also, I think they were able to notice that I am a shy and
didnt seem enthusiastic with the internship opportunity.
I believe this assignment was very helpful for me because it got me out of my comfort
zone to make the video. I also got the experience of an interview. In my previous job, I was not
required to do one. I was also able to get great feedback from my group members and that will
help me with future interviews.
