MEXT scholarship interview 2013

JULY 14, 2012JULY 20, 2012 / I.VY15

I went for the rst interview in my life yesterday and it was indeed
a very important one which can determine where would I be next
year Japan or Malaysia.

There were 11 of us competing for the scholarship but I was not

really sure about the number of people who will be granted this
golden opportunity to study in Japan for 5 7 years.

Since this was my rst experience of being interviewed,I was

certainly clueless about what would happen next. Anyway,I
prepared my self-intro in English and Japanese besides preparing
answers for some expected questions like Why do you want to
study in Japan?.

The interview ended in less than 15 minutes and the panel

consisted of 2 Japanese and 3 Malaysians.First,I was asked to do
self-intro while they ipped through my les.I talked about my
dream, ambition and so on but soon running out of words as I was
not really prepared yet :S

One of the Japanese interviewers si ing in the middle questioned

about my desired elds of study.Well,Japanese language was the
rst choice following by Pedagogy and Literature.I gave reasons
which the interviewer seemed to agree and another Japanese man
kept nodding whenever I answered the questions. As Japanese are
really famous for their manners,I could not say whether he was
agreeing with me or just showing that he was listening to what I
said.

In fact, being the last person called in to the interviewing room, I did

get some info from those who entered the room earlier. One of them
told me clearly that no questions were based on the application

form yet basically 70% of the questions directed were

form yet basically 70% of the questions directed were related to

it.lol

During the self-intro, I told them that I had been studying both
Japanese and Korean on my own for quite some time.I was then
questioned about my motivation to learn Korean language and
whether I have ever thought of studying in Korea -,-

The Japanese interviewer si ing in the middle was leading the

interview while the rest were simply jo ing down marks or
comments on their paper. He was apparently a Japanese language
teacher as he seemed very passionate about Japanese literature and
asked really lots of question about that. I was so blank because I
knew li le about those literature stus other than the Japanese
novel that I was reading currently ( by , a
really good novel!)

I was not as nervous as I expected myself to be throughout the

morning in the Japanese Embassy. However,I made a lot of mistakes
and missed many chances to express myself be er.

It was still a good experience nevertheless

My questions are they ask more about the course or on your
personality and your experiences?
The interview was in English or in Japanese?

Hi,

Glad to know youve made it through and secured the

scholarship at last! Although this post is almost 3 years old, I
still hope someone would reply to my question

I am applying for MEXT scholarship and currently lling up the

Placement Preference form. I really hope to enrol in Todai as a
research student (then proceed to a master course). I actually
visited a Todai professor and obtained his le er of consent to
supervise me starting next year.

But since the Placement Preference form requires me to ll in 3

preferred universities, I think it would be too risky for me to put
all 3 choices as Todai. The form also indicates placement in
preferred universities, especially in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, is
extremely dicult. Also, from the guideline, I read that its
be er to ll in national university rather than public or private
university due to budgetary reasons concerning school fees.
So, this left me a li le choice and until now I cant nd other
national universities that accept research student in their
graduate schools (I will nd harder tomorrow).

I also feel bad for lling in other universities and end up if I pass
the screenings I have to turn down the oers from the
universities which MEXT doesnt place me in. But I guess this is
something everyone has to do. I would like to know more about
this part and I appreciate if anyone could reply to me, thank you
