January!!!
Dear Brothers and Sisters,

First of all, Happy New Year for all your New Beginnings.

Being the lead of every year it also gave us a great leader - Swami Vivekananda
(12 January, 1863).

Swami Vivekananda was an Indian Hindu monk and chief disciple of the 19th-century
Indian mystic Ramakrishna. He was a key figure in the introduction of the Indian philosophies
of Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world. He was a major force who contributed to the concept
of nationalism in colonial India.

He is perhaps best known for his speech which began, "Sisters and brothers of
America ...," in which he introduced Hinduism at the Parliament of the World's Religions in
Chicago in 1893.

So we should follow his footsteps and never give up our Hard work Halfway. We should
also posses the important quality that he suggested, Self Confidence.

The Greatest Sin is to think yourself Weak

FPGA Implementation of Maximum Power Point
Tracking Control Method for PV System
Ms.A.Tamilarasi
Assistant Professor
Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering

One of the most important problems facing the world today is the energy problem. This
problem is resulted from the increase of demand for electrical energy and raised of fossil fuel
prices. Another problem in the world is the global climate change has increased. As these
problems alternative technologies for producing electricity have received greater attention. The
most important solution was in finding other renewable energy resources. Renewable energy
sources play an important role in electric power generation.

The applications for solar energy are increasing nowadays, and that need to improve the
materials and methods used to harness this power source. Main factors that affect the efficiency
of the solar energy are solar cell efficiency, intensity of source radiation and storage techniques.
It is particularly difficult to make considerable improvements in the performance of the cell, and
hence restricts the efficiency of the overall collection process. Therefore, the increase of the
intensity of radiation received from the sun is the most attainable method of improving the
performance of solar power. There are three major approaches for maximizing output power in
solar systems. They are sun tracking, maximum power point (MPP) tracking or both. These
methods need controllers which may be intelligent such as fuzzy logic controller or conventional
controller such as PID controller or advanced Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA)
controller.

Power output of a Solar PV module changes with change in direction of sun, changes is
the solar insolation level and with varying temperature. Maximum power corresponds to a
particular voltage and current. The efficiency of the solar PV module is low about 13%. Since
EEE NEWSLETTER Page 15
Vol.3 Issue 6
NATIONAL ENGINEERING COLLEGE (AN AUTONOMOUS INSTITUTION)
JAN 2016

the module efficiency is low it is desirable to operate the module at the peak power point so that
the maximum power can be delivered to the load under varying temperature and insolation
conditions.

FPGA is suitable for rapid implementation of MPPT controller and can be programmed
to do any type of digital functions. Any new bit stream can be downloaded remotely. An FPGA
has the ability to operate faster over other controllers. Because of the flexibility of the FPGA,
additional functionality and user interface controls can be incorporated into the FPGA
minimizing the requirement for additional external components. Therefore, it is cheaper too.

FPGAs are programmed using Very High Speed Integrated Circuit hardware description
language (VHDL) and a download cable connected to a host computer. Once they are
programmed, they can be disconnected from the computer at any time, and it will be running as a
stand-alone device. The FPGAs can be programmed while they run, because they can be
reprogrammed in the order of microseconds.

The hardware implementation of Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) control

algorithm on FPGA is very important because of the increasing number of its applications
requiring highly parallel and high speed processing. A significant advantage of this MPPT
controller is that it has been coded in VHDL and programmed into a single field programmable
gate array (FPGA). Because this reduces the number of electronic components used to
implement the controller, it enables redundancy by having multiple copies or images of the code,
and yields robustness as a controller that has multiple systems capability.

The Spartan-6LX45 is used as an MPPT controller. The Atlys circuit board is a complete,
ready-to-use digital circuit development platform based on a Xilinx Spartan-6 LX45 FPGA,
speed grade -3. The large FPGA and on-board collection of high-end peripherals including Gbit
Ethernet, HDMI Video, 128MByte 16-bit DDR2 memory, and USB and audio ports make the
Atlys board an ideal host for a wide range of digital systems, including embedded processor
designs based on Xilinxs Micro Blaze. Atlys is compatible with all Xilinx CAD tools, including
Chip Scope, EDK, and the free ISE Web Pack, so designs can be completed at no extra cost.

SPARTAN 6 Development Board

The Atlys board includes Digilent's newest Adept USB2 system, which offers device
programming, real-time power supply monitoring, automated board tests, virtual I/O, and
simplified user-data transfer facilities. This is 42% less power consumption over previous
generation devices because of its power management.

CONCLUSION:

Solar power continues to prove its potential as revolution for renewable energy. One of
the main concerns for fixing problems involved with solar panel is of solar panel efficiency. A
major goal for this solar panel application design was to optimize efficiency whenever possible.
Continuous effort to maximize the efficiency should always be taken when we designing solar
power applications to increase the solar energies usability and value. The design of maximum
power point tracking system proved to be serious design challenge.

KNOW THE CONCEPTS THROUGH SIMULATION

- M.Manikandan and S.Ebenezer, Final Year

DIFFERENTIATOR:

In electronics, a differentiator is a circuit that is designed such that the output of the circuit is
approximately directly proportional to the rate of change (the time derivative) of the input. An
active differentiator includes some form of amplifier. A passive differentiator circuit is made of
only resistors and capacitors.

PASSIVE DIFFERENTIATOR:

Passive differentiator circuit can be made using a simple first-orderhigh-pass filter, with the cut-
off frequency set to be far above the highest frequency in the signal.

INTEGRATOR:

An integrator is a component whose output signal is the time integral of its input signal. It
is the continuous analog of a counter, cumulating the input into an output.Integration is an
important part of many engineering and scientific calculations. Mechanical integrators are used
in such applications as metering of water flow or electric power. Electronic analog integrators
were the basis of analog computers. See also Practical Integrator.

Walking house is a modular dwelling system that enables persons to live a peaceful
nomadic life, moving slowly through the landscape or cityscape with minimal impact on the
environment. It collects energy from its surroundings using solar cells and small windmills.
There is a system for collecting rain water and a system for solar heated hot water. A small
greenhouse unit can be added to the basic living module, to provide a substantial part of the food
needed by the Inhabitants. A composting toilet system allows sewage produced by the
inhabitants to be disposed of small wood burning stove could be added to provide CO2 neutral
heating. WALKING HOUSE forms various sizes of communities or WALKING VILLAGES
when more units are added together. WALKING HOUSE is not dependant on existing
infrastructure like roads, but moves on all sorts of terrain.

CONSTRUCTION:
Each unit is equipped with the basic systems for maintaining everyday life for a
maximum of four persons. But it could easily be scaled up for larger family structures. Furniture
is an integrated part of the structure. The module can be constructed from numerous materials. It
is based on a framework made of steel, aluminum or wood and can be covered with steel,
aluminum, wood or even semi- permeable textiles. Windows are made of polycarbonate.
Insulation could be anything from thin plates of Polyethylene to wool. The rear of the modules
opens up to form a stair that functions as an entrance.

EXTENSIONS:
Walking house could easily be equipped with specialized modules for various forms of
productions like greenhouses, small factories etc. A WALKING HOUSE or a WALKING
VILLAGE could supply means for the inhabitants to make a living in this way while moving
through the Landscapes and cityscapes. As an example a WALKING VILLAGE could be
specialized in food production or special modules for fish farming, greenhouses and so on could
be part of the construction. The concepts are that six legs could be mounted on any kind of
structure and make it walk. When it walks three legs are always on the ground to provide the

necessary stability. The structure should move at a slow pace similar to the walking speed of the
human body`

BASIC MODULE:
Height : 3.5 meters Width : 3.5 meters Length : 3.72 meters
Weight : 1200 kg Max speed : 60 meters/hour

THINNEST LIGHT BULB

Scientists have long wanted to create a teensy "light bulb" to place on a chip, enabling
what is called photonic circuits, which run on light rather than electric current. The problem has
been one of size and temperature incandescent filaments must get extremely hot before they
can produce visible light. This new graphene device is so efficient and tiny.

When electric current is passed through an incandescent light bulb's filament usually
made of tungsten the filament heats up and glows. Electrons moving through the material
knock against electrons in the filament's atoms, giving them energy. Those electrons return to
their former energy levels and emit photons in the process. Crank up the current and voltage
enough and the filament in the light bulb hits temperatures of about 5,400 degrees Fahrenheit for
an incandescent. This is one reason light bulbs either have no air in them or are filled with an
inert gas like argon: At those temperatures tungsten would react with the oxygen in air and
simply burn.

The scientists used strips of grapheme from 6.5 to 14 microns in length and a trench of
silicon like a bridge. An electrode was attached to the ends of each graphene strip. Just like
tungsten, run a current through graphene which conducts heat less efficiently as temperature
increases and the material will light up.

The temperature of hot electrons at the center of the graphene is about 3,000 K , while the
graphene lattice temperature is still about 2,000 K . It results in a hotspot at the center and the
light emission region is focused at the center of the graphene, which also makes for better

efficiency and so the electrodes at either end of the graphene don't melt. The light emitted from
the graphene also reflected off the silicon that each piece was suspended in front of. The
reflected light interferes with the emitted light, producing a pattern of emission with peaks at
different wavelengths.

WHATS NEXT?
A question mostly encountered on our mind
Im about to complete my degree and Im not
having a job, what can I do?
Is masters degree good? Will I get a job?
I want to share this because Im one of them
A recent article showed 1.5 million engineering
graduates are coming out every year in India, which is
higher than combining USA & China. Out of which
33% are end up without jobs &of the rest -some with
jobs well below their technical qualifications. With all these surveys and statistics, we came to a
conclusion that there is no jobs in India. Is that really true? Lemme show you another survey
which reveals the truth. Out of the said graduates only 20-25% (even lower) are qualified or
eligible as an engineer, so the reason behind the low employability is clear now & well it
answers those questions too.
This may help some who are not hired by any company and joining the pool of
unemployed graduates. The best thing is Dont worry about it, youare lucky enough to start a
better life than others. Only thing istrust & motivate yourself.
After graduating dont directly jump into higher studies, it is a trend followed by most of
us if we graduate without job, even if with well percentage or enough economic backgrounds.
First we need to know about ourselves not like our strength, weakness, dream job these will
help us but wont guide us. Rather find what the organization needs from us? Where they are

lacking? How our presence will make a change? These questions are answered only when you
work with them. Try to get a job and understand the process. Here we face another problem, not
that getting a job but our own mind-set. There are some opportunities in the name of internship,
which gives you a great platform to show yourself and to learn about the organization process,
structures, lacking points. This is what a real learning time, keep away everything and get onto
the floor. Try to find what the organization lacks, dig onto that and make that as your core
strength. During that time, you will get to know about your real skills and how to make yourself
excel. At the end of your tenure, mostly you will get an extension and in some case you will end
up with permanent position. Continue to work for a year and take an internal survey of yourself,
then decide your stream for higher studies.
Only way to find opportunities is to develop your network, interact with strangers
whoever you meet on your travel, stayed connected with them through social networks. Now you
are on the campus a good place to find and contact with your seniors. Throw out the engineer
title from the mind. Always being a student is what brings the success.

This worked for me and hope sure will work for you too.

FLOURISH YOUR SOFT SKILLS!!!!

- R.Uma Maheswaran, Final Year

Welcome to the first issue of the New Year!!! In this issue, let us discuss about the
blossoming and bubbling topic in the trend, Emotional Intelligence, which is said to be an
important factor in soft skill and interpersonal skills. Let us discuss about that in brief. Emotional
Intelligence (EI or sometimes EQ Emotional Quotient) is a more modern concept and was only
fully developed in the mid-1990s, by Daniel Goleman, among others.

What is Emotional Intelligence?

Many of us are aware of IQ (Intelligence Quotient). A logical assumption, therefore, is
that people with higher IQs will be more successful at work and through life. This assumption
has been proven incorrect there is more to success than simply being clever. That so called
more is nothing but Emotional Intelligence.
EEE NEWSLETTER Page 24
Vol.3 Issue 6
NATIONAL ENGINEERING COLLEGE (AN AUTONOMOUS INSTITUTION)
JAN 2016

It can be defined as Emotional Intelligence is the measure of an individuals abilities

to recognize and manage their emotions, and the emotions of other people, both individually
and in groups.
Benefits of Higher Emotional Intelligence
People with higher emotional intelligence find it easier to form and maintain
interpersonal relationships and to fit in to group situations.
People with higher emotional intelligence are also better at understanding their own
psychological state, which can include managing stress effectively and being less likely to suffer
from depression.
Elements of Emotional Intelligence
Daniel Goleman divided Emotional Intelligence into Personal and Social
competences, which broadly split between personal and interpersonal skills on SkillsYouNeed.
Within each of these sections are a range of skills which are the elements of emotional
intelligence

Personal Competences Social Competences

(How we manage ourself) (How we handle relationship with others)
Self-awareness Empathy
