1-1. General
This is specifications and operation manual for the VARISWITCH VS-2.
The VS-2 is an electronic switch system designed as an alternative to the troublesome mechanical limit switch format
which most conventional machines use. A side from its lower cost, the VS-2 format enables the detection positions to
be changed easily and quickly.

The VS-2 allows a sensor to be selected which is suitable for the machine type where position detection is to occur.
Rotary type, linear type, and cylinder type sensors are available. Moreover, the switch positions can be specified as
rotational angle or length values. When specified as length values, the sensor's scale length can be set in either "mm"
or "inch" units, to match the specifications of the machine in question.

These settings can be specified from a single VS-T01 setting unit by changing the system program. Simply select the
system program for the application in question. System programs are kept on system cards which can easily be
changed.

A-1
1-2. Features
Some of the main VS-2 features are described below.

(1)Intelligent Switch
User difinable set points over the complete range of ABSOCODER position sensor. Input/output monitoring and easy
adjustments of ON/OFF positions are also possible during operation.

(2)5 Switch Outputs

5 additional switch outputs (total of 10) are possible with the expansion switch box.

(3)Long Distance

1-4. Definitions and Functions
Definitions and functions are described below.

Item Description
ABSOCODER ABSOCODER is the generic name given to the NSD-developed position sensor which
detects rotational / linear displacement, speed, and acceleration, using an absolute position
detection format with a digital (or analog) output.
The ABSOCODER sensor consists of two main components :
The sensor, where displacement is detected by the change in magnetic resistance, and the
converter, where the sensors output signal (when an AC excitation signal has been
applied to the sensor) is converted into absolute data.
The converter for Multi-Turn type or Linear type ABSOCODER sensor is built-in to the
VS-2.
Scale length This refers to the maximum distance over which the ABSOCODER sensor can execute
absolute detection. The scale length can be designated in units which match the machines
travel amount (mm inches, degrees, etc.).

For multi-turn type ABSOCODER sensors (MRE Series), the scale length will be the
machines travel amount which corresponds to the prescribed number of sensor shaft
turns(326412816025632064012802560.

Example
When a 32-turn MRE Series sensor is linked to a machine which moves 10mm per each
sensor shaft revolution, and when the minimum setting unit of machines drive unit is
0.01mm, the scale length would be as follows :
Actual detection distance = 10mm / turn 32 turns = 320mm
Scale length (L) = actual detection distance / minimum setting unit
L = 320 / 0.01 = 32000

For linear type ABSOCODER sensors (VLS series), the scale length is determined
according to the designated display system-of-units (mm / inch).

Example
If mm units are designated, the scale length is the same as the maximum detection
stroke of the sensor model being used. For the VLS-512PW350B model with a minimum
setting unit of 0.1, the scale length would be determined as follows :
Scale length (L) = Max. detection stroke / min. setting unit.
L = 512 / 0.1 = 5120

If inches are designated as the display system-of units, the scale length is the maximum
detection stroke value converted to inches. For the VLS-512PW350B model, the scale
length would be 20.157 (512 / 2504 = 20.157)

Note
The VS-2 executes absolute position detection within the detection range. However, if
this detection range is exceeded, the current position value will immediately change by the
amount of the entire scale length. Therefore, if is essential that the machines travel range
not exceed the scale length.

A-4
Item Description
Minimum current This is the minimal value of the scale length which can be displayed.
position value This value can be designated as desired within the following range :
-99999 to [1000000 scale length]

Example
Given the same conditions as those described in the Scale Length item, and with the
actual minimum position value of the machine detection range being 10mm, the
following will apply :

Minimum current position value (K) = actual minimum position value

/ minimum setting unit K = -10 / 0.01 = -1000

Machine detection range320mm

Scale length32000

Min. position value-10mm Max. position value309.99mm

(Min. current position value-1000) (Max. current position value30999)

Current position This value indicates where the machine is currently positioned within the machine
value detection range. This value can be designated as desired within the following range :
Minimum current position value to [Minimum current position value + scale length - 1]

Example
With position detection executed by a 32-turn MRE sensor with a scale length of 32000,
minimum current position value of 1000, the current position value of 10000 will be
designated as shown below when the machines actual position is at the 100mm point.
Machine detection range 320mm
Scale length 32000

Min. position value -10mm Max. position value 309.99mm

Min. current position value -1000 Max. current position value 30999
Machine actual position 100.00mm
Current position value 10000
Sensor rotation Depending on the direction in which the ABSOCODER sensor is rotation (or direction of
direction rod travel, for linear type), the position data value will increase or decrease. The direction
(Direction of rod of rotation (or rod travel) in which the position data value increases can be designated as
travel) either CW or CCW as desired.
CW
For multi-turn type ABSOCODER sensor (MRE series)
CW settingPosition data value will increase when the sensor shaft
rotates CW (viewed from shaft direction).
CCW settingPosition data value will increase when the sensor shaft
Rotates CCW (viewed from shaft direction).

For linear type ABSOCODER sensor (VLS series)

CW
CW settingPosition data value will increase with rightward rod
travel (see fig. )
CW settingPosition data value will increase leftward rod travel

External origin set This function permits an origin point setting to be designated by an external input.
Switch output When the switch box operation is stopped when using the Hand-Held Pendant, the switch
Hold output ON/OFF status which existed just prior to the STOP will be maintained.
