.GENERAL WELDING GRITERIA

6.1 EXTRUDER

TRANSMISSION
WELDING ROD

HEATING DEVICE

MINI EXTRUDER

WELDING SHOE

Portable welding machine is composed by a mini extruder with a plasticizing unit, operated by on electric drill.
The pre-heating of parts to weld is done with o hot air blower, where the air is generated independently by the
blower.
Welding pressure is given with the non stick welding shoe directly ossembled on the extruder and corresponding
to the outlet of welding rod. According to the applicotion welding shoe c a n hove different configurotions, 1o
guorantee a correct ond homogeneous pressure.
Welding material, supplied in coils, necessor/ for welding, is positioned in the special hole to be plasticized in the
same extruder. According to diameter of rod, different quantities of material in Kg will be extruded.

6.2 PERFORMANCE
Surfaces of parts to be welded ore heoted of welding temperature by hot air which comes out from specioi
nozzle. Welding material, continuously coming out from the welder manually operated, is pressed on components
to be w e l d e d . Flux of material, pushes forward automatically the apparatus and determine welding speed. The
heoting of surfaces to be welded together must be a d a p t e d to welding speed.

6.3 MATERIAL REQUIREMENTS

Welding material ond material to be welded must be suitable for extrusin welding.
As far os plstic moterial, for type ond main characteristics of material, o certificte of the producer should
availoble, according to DIN 50049.
Welding material and parts to be welded must be in perfect conditions. Make sure they c o n be welded accordi
to DVS 2203.

6.4 WELDING MATERIAL

Welding material must be chosen according to extruder welder chosen for the work a n d kind of material to
welded. Rod used as welding material, must follow certain characteristics of dimensional precisin, of form a r :
absence of contraction cavities (see Bulletin DVS 2211).
Material of unknown origins should not be welded. Welding of recycled materiols is forbidden.
Welding rod must be dry o n d clean; olso avoid humidity for not risking to woste the weld.

6.5 WELDING GEOMETRY

When choosing welding geometry for contoiners or other opporotus, refer to regulations DVS 2205.
In particular general principies of configurotion must be token into considerofion, from o welding technique point
of view, as follows.
In the extrusin welding ore generolly welded joints with oniy one deposit of plostic . If in cose of very thick
moterials, "Double V" weld would not be possible to perform (see following description), it is possible to weld
joints with several welding layers. Welding rod must go about 3 mm beyond joint to be welded.
Following are the most used o n d known types of extrusin welds.

A "V"-we!d

Seprate Welded

An angle between 45 and 90 must be chosen, according to sheet to be welded. Width of opening "B" is limited
to obout 30 mm in case of welds with oniy one welding layer, otherwise the operotor would not be able to
perform the necessary welding pressure.
To obtain a g o o d heating o n d welding, it is necessor/ to prepare^, on top pgrt,' a fissure 2 mm wide. If this
dimensin cannot be respected, it is necessory to do something, like for exarriple use some more hot air or make
another layer of weld.

6.6 PREPARATION OF SURFACES TO BE WELDED

Areas interested in the

preparation of ttie edges

Surfaces which are going to be welded o n d surfaces near the orea of welding string, ore treoted ond s c r a p e d '
before welding. For this purpose oniy use suitable tools. Parts which surfaces hove been d o m o g e d by ofmosp'
or chemical agents, must b e scraped until reaching the intoct zone; this sjtuations often occurs when rpa
something
It is important to avoid using solvent detergents or detergents that might deform the material.
In order to re-equilibrate possible differences in temperature between materiols to be welded, it is necessary
stock them in working place, for a period of time necessor/ for them to b e c o m e of same characteristics, b e '
performing any welding

6.7 GOINGOVERTHE JOINT AGAIN

Welds should be done in such a woy that do not need any further treotments.
In case one wonts to go over the weld ogain, it is necessary to make sure that the previous weld is without any
imperfection.
When going over the weld ogain, it is necessor/ to avoid notches.

6.8 SAFETY AND QUALITY OF THE JOINT

When moking a joint, it is necessary to reoch volue of resistance fixed in the calculation of the welded material.
From DVS 2205 regulation it is possible to verify doto on :he resistance that can be obtained on the welded joints.
It is necessor/ to consider that the vales shown in the regulation, ore referred to o " V " weld. In cose of other
types of welds, it is necessary to consider lower resistance.
Regulations DVS 2203 ond 2206, describe indication obout tests on the welded joint and welded structures.
A fast test would be the folding which is described on the DVS 2203.

EXTERNAL AIR CONNECTION

If working with STARGUN CB versions it is necessory to connect the hot blower with on external oir source. Set o
pressure of about 0,4 bar.

NOTE: In order to avoid welding defects, the oir supplied must be free of humidity.

7.2 USE OF THERMOREGULATOR

temperature is increosed or decreosed by more
than 10 C , the drill will automoticolly turn off until it
reaches the temperature set.

NOTE: (1) Temperature set corresponds to the real

7.3 USE OF HOT AIR BLOWER

Normally follow operating instructions written on ttie Versin SB & CB

manual enclosed relotive to the type of blower
supplied.
Blower is independent from termoregulotor of extruder
ond it is used oniy for the pre-heating of components to
be welded.

Working temperature adjustment:

Versin SB (independent blower); to obtoin an

oir temperature of 240C (*) for the pre-
heating, make the sign on the reguloting metal
ring to match with the sign on the blower^
Versin CB (compressor blower): follow
instructions written on the manual enclosed.

(*) Warning: this pre-heating temperoture is indicotive

a n d c o n be modified according to requirements.

Choose 0 of rod to use according to thickness of

material to be welded a n d in any case according to
applicotion required.

7.4 FUNCTIONALTEST

Welding rod positioning

Verify the correct plasticization of material:
press start switch ond button to lock the drill in
movement.
At the same time insert welding rod in the special hole.
Let the material to c o m e out for 30 sec from welding
shoe a n d make sure that it is correctly plasticized, afer
that turn the drill off.

Welding test:
w e suggest to make a welding test before moking the
actual weld (follow the same procedures).
Lean welding shoe on two objects to be welded. Pre-
heot the objects for o few seconds before turning on drill.
By exercising o certain pressure, drive movement of
extruder.

After use position the extruder on special support.

SUGGESTION: After use, before disconnecting the plug,

lower temperature of blower with the special regulotor
and wait for a few minutes for the oir to cool down. This
operotion will help electrical resistance to lost longer.

8. MAINTENANCE

The extruder does not need particular maintenance due to its insensitivity to external agents.
We recommend to cleon the STARGUN after ever/ use.
