aambaradharam=clad in white clothes; Vishnum=all pervading. Sasivarnam=with the glow of
the Moon; chaturbhujam=with four arms; prasanna vadanam=having a pleasing face;
dhyaayeth=I meditate upon; sarva vighnopasaantaye= to ward off all obstacles.
We meditate on the all pervading :Lord Ganesha,who glows cool like the Moon, has four
arms, is clad in white, and has a pleasing countenance , to ward off all obstacles.

yasya=where; dvirada vaktraadyaa=elephant faced Gods, paarishadyacha=in the court of:


parah=supreme; shatam=in hundreds; vighnam=obstacles; nighnanti=removes;
satatam=always., Vishwaksenam=Vishwaksensa; tam=Him; aashraye=we seek refuge in.

We seek refuge in Vishwaksena, the Supreme, who removes all obstacles, and in whose court,
hundreds of elephant faced Gods serve.

Vyaasam =Vyaasa; Vasishta naptaaram=the great grand son of Vasishta; shakteh=Shakti’s;


pautram=the grandson of; akalmasham=sinless; Parasara=of Parasara muni; atmajam=son;
Vande= I bow to; shuka taatam=father of Suka maharshi; taponidhim=whose wealth is austerity;
I bow to that sinless Vyasa maharshi, who is the great grand son of Vasishta, grand son of
Shakti, son of Parasara and the father of Suka maharshi whose only wealth is his austerity.

Vyaasaaya=to Vyaasa; Vishnu roopaaya=who is a form of Vishnu; Vyaasa roopaaya= in the


form of Vyaasa; Vishnave=to Vishnu; Namo vai=my salutations; Brahma nidhaye=Brahma rishi;
Vaasishtaaya=one who is born in the dynasty of Vasishta; namo namah=my repeated salutations.
Salutations to Vyaasa who is a form of Vishnu and to Vishnu who is in the form of Vyaasa.
My repeated salutations to that Brahma rishi in the dynasty of Vasishta.

bandhanaat=bondage; vimuchyate=liberated from; namah=salutations tasmai=to Him;
Vishnave=Lord Vishnu; prabha vishnave=who is the originator of the universe.
Salutations to Lord Vishnu, theCreator of the Universe, Who liberates from the bondage of
life processes, just by remembering Him.

Om=OM; namo=I bow; Vishnave=to Lord Vishnu; prabha Vishnave=the Creator, Vishnu.
I bow to the creator of the universe, Lord Vishnu, with Om in my mind.

Yudhishtara said:
Who is that One God in all these worlds(Q1) , Who is to be obtained and is the ultimate refuge
of all(Q2), by worshipping Whom(Q3), and praising Whom(Q4) and being engrossed with
Whom(obsessed with Whom), people obtain welfare?

Jagat prabhum deva devam anantam purushottamam
Stuvan naama sahasrena purushah satatotthitah
Jagat =of all the worlds; prabhum=The Lord ; Deva Devam=God of all Gods;
anantham=Endless; purushottamam=the Supreme Being; stuvan=by praising, chanting,
naama=names;sahasrena=thousands ;
Purushah=the human being; satata=always; utthitah=is elevated.(different meanings depending
on the context=always ready to;
Sri Bheeshma said:
Living beings, worshipping the Lord of the worlds, the God of all Gods, who is the Supreme
Being and is endless, by chanting thousands of His names are always elevated(satata
utthithah)

Tam evacha=Him only (who is described earlier); archayan=is to be worshipped;
nityam=always; bhaktya=with devotion; Purusham=Supreme being( who exists in all beings);
avyayam=indestructible; dhyaayan=by meditating upon; stuvan=singing in praise;
namasyan=bowing down to;cha=and; yajamaanas=human beings; tam=Him , evacha=only;
By always 1)worshipping, with devotion,2)meditating,3) singing in praise, and 4)bowing down
to Him only, who is the Supreme Being existing in all beings, …..(Sarva dukhaatigo
bhavet=overcomes all griefs).

anaadi=with no beginning; nidhanam=end(this means without beginning and without
end):Vishnum=one who is spread all over; sarva=all; loka=worlds; mahesvaram=The Supreme
Lord; Loka=for all the worlds; lokaadhyaksham=presiding authority; stuvan=worshipping;

Worshipping always, that Supreme Lord of all the worlds, who is presiding authority of all
worlds, who is without beginning and without end( without changes), is sure way to overcome
all griefs.

knowledge); sarva dharmajnam=Knower of all dharmas(duties);lokaanaam keerti
vardhanam(one who increases the fame and wealth according to their deeds of merit(according
to their punya); lokanaatham=Lord of all worlds Who has to be beseeched for fulfillment;
mahadbhootam=Greatest entity; sarva bhoota bhavodbhavam=One from Whom all beings
emerge
Brahmanyam sarva dharmajnam lokaanaam keertivardhanam
Loka naatham mahadbhootam sarva bhoota bhavodbhavam.
He is the cause and creator of Brahma who creates these worlds and He is the One who
propitiates the austerities and the Vedic knowledge. He is the knower of all dharmas(duties);
He is the One who increases the fame and wealth of beings according to their deeds of
merit(punya). He is the Lord of all worlds who has to be beseeched for fulfillment. He is the
greatest entity from whom all beings emerge.

Yadbhaktyaa Pundareekaaksham stavairarchen narah sadaa.
Worshipping and praising (in different forms), this lotus Eyed God(Vaasudeva) always is in
my opinion most important duty of all human beings.

Supreme; yo=Which is: mahat=Greatest; tapah=Austerity: paramam=the Supreme: yo=Which is;
mahat=Greatest: Brahma=the Brahman; paramam=Supreme(Highest); yah=must be:
paraayanam=the obsession.

Paramam yo mahat tejah paramam yo mahat tapah

Paramam yo mahat Brahma paramam yah paraayanam


One must always be involved with, and obsessed with that Supreme entity called the Great
Brahman, which is most effulgent and most austere, and goal of all austerities.

Yasmincha pralayam yaanti punareva yuga kshaye
That Entity from Whom all beings emerge at the beginning of each time cycle and into Whom
all beings enter at the time final annihilation at the end of each time cycle……….

paapa=sins; bhaya=fear of; apaham=which removes;
Tasya loka pradhaanasya, jagannathasya bhoopate
Vishnornaama sahasrasam may shrunu paapa bhayaapaham.
Listen from me Oh! King, (with rapt attention), the thousand(s of) names of Him who is of
foremost importance in all the worlds, who is the master of all the worlds, which dispel the
fear of all sins.

praise in the form of stories etc.; taani=those (names);

beings(bhoota=beings; yay=for (the benefit of)

For the benefit of all beings, I shall now narrate those names, sung by the learned sages in
His praise, which describe some of the attributes of the Supreme Lord and which are most

thousand; Veda Vyaaso=Sri VedaVyaasa; mahamuni=the great
sage; Chando=the meter is; anushtup=is Anushtup;
tathaa=similarly; devo=the God is; Bhagavaan=the Lord;
Devakee=of Devaki ; sutah=son.

For these thousand names, the Rishi is the great sage Veda
Vyaasa. The meter is anushtup and the Deity is the son of
Devaki, the Lord.

In few texts, there is a small variation in the sloka

amrutaamshoodbhavo=The Lord who created the Moon; (Moon is supposed to have come from
the mind of the Lord(Chandramaa manaso jaataha chaksho sooryo ajaayata).. beejam=is the
seed.. shaktir=power is; Devaki nandanah=Devaki nandana; trisaamaa=One who is glorified by
the three types of saama veda manthras(Deva, Vratha and Prokta) hridayam=is the heart;
tasya=that(in this context it means that Ultimate); shaantyarthe=obtaining peace;
viniyujyate=used for;

Trisaamaa hrudayam tasya shaantyarthay viniyujyate
The seed for this great manthra is “Amrutaamshoodbhava” the creator of the Moon(The
Lord). The power comes from (the words), Devaki Nandanah; The heart of this great
manthra is Trisaama(One who is glorified by the three types of Saama veda manthras. The
manthra is used for obtaining the Ultimate peace.

For this great praising hymn, the manthra consising of these thousand divine names of the
auspicious Lord Vishnu,
Sree=the auspicious; Veda Vyaaso=Veda Vyaasa is; Bhagavaan=the Lord(in the form of Veda
Vyaasa); rishih=the rishi(Seer/sage);
The seer/Sage is the Lord in the form of Veda Vyaasa;
Anushtup= Anushtup; chandah=is the meter;
The meter is Anushtup;
Sree =the auspicious; Mahaa=the Great; Vishnuh=Lord Vishnu; paramaathmaa=the
Supreme soul; Shreeman=the most auspicious; Naaraayano =is Naaraayana; Devataa=the

Lord who created the Moon and who
shines;
Devakee nandanah=Son of Devaki; srishteti(srashtaa+iti)=the
Creator, who is:; shaktih=power of(the manthra);
The power of the manthra comes from
the words, Devakee nandana, the Son of
Devaki, the Creator
udbhava=arises(causes to); kshobhano=agitating,
awakening;stimulating; devah=all Deities; (The other meaning
is: udbhava=at the time of creation; kshobhano=(entered the
gunas He created and) caused agitation which brought forth
prakriti; devah=God who) iti=this; paramo=supreme;
mantrah=the mantra;
This manthra causes awakening of the powers of all deities.
(The other interpretation is: The Lord at the time of creation,
creates the Gunas and enters them and causes agitation by
which Prakriti is created.)
Shankah=the Conch; bhrit(n)=wearing(holding);Nandakee=the
bearer of the sword ( Nandaka=means word, in particular, the
sword of Sri Krishna. The other meaning is “one which gives
happiness). Chakree=the bearer of the Disc(chakra) iti=is;
keelakam=the key that unlocks the power of the manthra.

The bearer of the Conch, the sword and


disc is the key that unlocks the power of
the manthra
Shaarnjna=the bow of Lord Vishnu; dhanvaa=holding the bow;
gadaa=the mace dhara=holding; iti=is; astram=the weapon
protecting;
The Lord holding the bow Shaarjna, the
mace is the weapon protecting (the
devotees)
Rathaangapaanir=of one holding the reins of the
chariot(Parthasaarathi); in this context, holding the reins of
chariot of our life(Ratha+anga+paani=holding any part of the
chariot. Krishna holds the reins of the chariot as Paarthasaarathi.
He also once held the wheel of a chariot in anger to kill
Bheeshma in the war. Dictionaries have given the meaning as
Vishnu holding the Chakra or Disc). akshobhyah=eyes;
iti=is(are); netram=the eyes
The Lord holding the reins of the chariot(of our lives) or the
disc or the wheel is the eyes of this manthra (provides the
vision to the devotee chanting this manthra to the righteous
path).
Trisaama=the three types of Saama veda manthras(deva, prokta,
vrata); saamagah=One who sings Saama veda; Saama=is the
saama veda Himself: iti=is; kavacham=the armor:

The Lord glorified by the three types of manthras of the Saama


Veda, and Who sings the Saama Veda and is the very
personification of the Saama Veda forms the armor (for the
devotee chanting this manthra)
Aanandam=Supreme bliss; Parabrahma=the Supreme
Brahman;iti=is; yonih=the womb.
The Supreme bliss that is Supreme Brahman is the reservoir (womb)
Rituh=(the embodiment of) six seasons; Sudarshanah=One
with pleasing countenance; kaala=(Personification of time;)
iti=this; digbandhah=close all directions( from all distractions).;
(The other alternate meanings are as follows:Rituh=Truth;
Sudarshanah=Seeing the play of God in all situations;
Kaala=the One who controls the time(and fate of every one); iti
digbandhah=Concentrating on these, one shuts off all
distractions(in all directions).
The thoughts about the Lord who is the embodiment of six
seasons, the Time and the One with pleasing countenance will
close all directions(distractions of all sorts). The alternate
interpretation is: “The Absolute Truth and ability to see God’s
play in situations and one who controls time(fate of every one),
will shut off all distractions in all directions.”
Shree=Auspicious; Viswaroopa=on The Cosmic form; iti=is ;
dhyaanam=meditation.
(With this preparation of body and mind,) we now meditate on
the Cosmic form of the Lord.

This meditation(chanting) is used to


appease the auspicious, Great Lord
Vishnu
Poorva nyaasah (meaning only)

For this great praising hymn, the manthra consising of these


thousand divine names of the auspicious Lord Vishnu, the
seer/Sage is the Lord in the form of Veda Vyaasa. The meter is
Anushtup. The deity is the auspicious great Lord Vishnu, who
is the Supreme soul, Naaraayana. The seed is
Amrutaamshoodbhava, the Lord who created the shining Moon;
(or, Lord Krishna who was born in the Lunar dynasty). The
power of the manthra comes from the words, “Devakee
nandana”, the Son of Devaki, the Creator. This manthra causes
awakening of the powers of all deities. (The other interpretation
is: The Lord(Devah) at the time of creation, creates the Gunas
and enters them and causes agitation(kshobhanah) by which
