Notou, certamente, que o ttulo Os Maias seguido de um subttulo, Episdios da Vida Romntica.
Cada um desses elementos textuais tem um desenvolvimento prprio na obra:
o ttulo est sobretudo relacionado com a histria de uma famlia, ao longo de vrias
geraes;
o subttulo, como se depreende, desenvolvido em vrios momentos narrativos que
pretendem representar e satirizar a sociedade da poca, constituindo uma crnica de
costumes.
