Together along with the development of the Industrial Engineerings discipline sciences and
the more demand of the human resources who have an ability in the industrial affairs,
especially in creating the outstanding entrepreneurs, therefore we need to learn and
understand all the subjects related to Industrial Engineering. In addition, as we have known
that there are many subjects, which can and should support the learning process in The
Industrial Engineering. Each subject gives the different and meritorious contributions to us,
from the entrepreneurship knowledge until the way to make the design of the product that
will be produced. The entrepreneurship, management, manufacturing and economical
knowledge are the common subjects supporting the learning process in the Industrial
Engineering. However, there is subject which always forgotten in this learning process. We
do not forget about this subject, but we just do not know its functions. That is The
Engineering Drawing. Many students repeatedly ask and wonder, What is it for, while, we
should have focused on entrepreneurship knowledge [1]?
May be, it is the biggest wrong question. As we have known that before the entrepreneurs
produce their products, they need to design the shape of their products, the shape and
model of their wrapper products, the symbols, and many others related to the designing of
their products [2]. To design them, we need to know and learn Engineering Drawing.
Engineering Drawing is one of the subjects in the Industrial Engineering that can support
them who are studying in the Industrial Engineering. Literally, Engineering Drawing is a
bright, clear, and precision language that is used at design processing to communicate,
solve the problems, visualize an object clearly and accurately, and analyze it. The graphical
representation of an object and its structure can be done with handwriting sects, mechanics
(includes the tools of drawing), and computers [3].
The main purpose of the engineering drawing in the industrial engineering is to give the
ability and to grind the skill in reading and drawing the component of the machine and a
product of manufacturing activity. Moreover, it can be used to create the program of a
product in an industry. Without the designing, no products that can be produced base on
our planning; it can be different with our wish [4]. Even we cannot produce a thing if we do
not have any designs of shape, size, and the format of it. Moreover, the most important
thing in studying engineering drawing is how we can imagine the shape of the real things
in the picture [5]. Not only the shape of the real things, but also the size, and the way to
create them must be analyzed by using engineering drawing [6]. The designing of a product
is the biggest part of all the engineering activity. The designing is begun with gaining the
perception about the human necessary, creating the concept of the product, developing,
and making perfect the product, and finally manufacturing and distributing the product. In
designing, we need to make the important decisions that can support the next activities [7].
Besides, we will gain more ability and learn the essence of the engineering drawing. They
are, the ability to collect information (Information Gathering), the ability to generate idea
(Idea Generation), the ability to enhance concept (Concept Enhancement), and the ability to
visualize design (design visualization) [8].
First, we will gain and learn about the Information Gathering. In this first essence, we are
claimed to be able to get and collect the data or picture from many sources, such as books,
internet, and etcetera. Not only that, we are claimed to be able to recognize and to
understand the standard served pictures. Recognizing and understanding the served data
or picture can not be separated with the collecting data and otherwise. Both of them are the
base ability for us to learn and study the engineering drawing. We can recognize and
understand the data or picture which we have collected by analyzing it and prove the
validity of it. So that, we can step on to the next essences which will we gain. In the
Industrial Engineering, information gathering process can bring more benefits especially,
when the industrial engineers look for the information in analyzing factory process, and
causes of problems that happen in their factory.
Afterwards, we will gain the ability to generate our idea. It is shown with creating the idea of
a picture through the hand-writing sketch and also the comprehension to the projection. In
this part, we are claimed to be able to pour our idea into the first simple concept. This
concept has an important role to the next step. If we can not create our idea into the first
sketch, we will never gain the real design of the things or product which will be produced.
And all we have done in the first step will be useless. Neither will the industrial engineers.
The industrial engineers must be able to drive their idea into the realness. In the
entrepreneurship, the industrial engineers must have many decisions, and they have to
decide which will be the best way to gain their success. The first concept is not only one; we
should create more than one. So, when one of the concepts has a flaw, we can choose
another among the concepts we have crated. However, choosing the best concept is not
easy. We should be able to think forward and analyze the advantages and the
disadvantages of each concept. So, the possibility to error can be decreased and
depressed as early as, and as can as possible.
The simple concept which we have chosen must be enhanced into the perfect or final
concept through the Concept Enhancement. Before we enhance the chosen simple concept,
we have to understand about the piece, shape, size, and the limit of the tolerance to do the
mistakes. It is impossible if the industrial engineers produce the same products with the
different shape and size. It can be different, but not at the far differences. It is called the
tolerance limit. The concept enhancement process must be appropriate to the procedure
and the rule of the engineering drawing and the international standard. This process
influences the popularity and the role of the products in the society, especially in the today
industrialization era.
And the final essence of the engineering drawing is Design Visualization. We have to drive
the enhanced concept into the realness or into the tangible thing which has the perfect
shape and appropriateness with our wish. We are claimed to master the rule of products
surface configuration, simplifying the picture, the link of the picture, and the application of
the Computer Aided Design. The design of the product must be created into the complete
and more complete visualization and also more communicative. The design of the product
will be useless if that design is not created into the real and tangible thing. This influences
the Industrial engineers to think rationally and accustom them to make their wish real and
not only exists in their mind.
That is all the benefits and the function of the engineering drawing in the industrial
engineering. We can conclude that the design of the products is the result of the designer,
and the first base of manufacturing products by the manufacturer. The arranging of the
products design by the designer can be reached trough some steps in the long designing
process. Those all will we learn in The Engineering Drawing. Therefore, The Engineering
Drawing is needed and important in The Industrial Engineering, especially for Industrial
Engineers who want to be The Professional Entrepreneurs.

The definition of Industrial Engineering is discipline of utilizing and coordinating humans, machines, and
materials to attain a desired output rate with the optimum utilization of energy, knowledge, personel
organization, time standards, wage rates, intensive paymen plans to control the quantity and quality of
goods and services produced.[1] In currriculum industrial engineering consist of several constituent
elements such as : mathematic, physics, manufacturing processes, production system engineering,
engineering drawing, ergonomy, economy, introduction to industrial engieering, statistic, operational
research, etc. engineering drawing is one of the basic engineering in curriculum industrial engineering.
The advantage from teach engineering drawing, it probably also teaches you control, working with
straight edges, mathematics, scale, and proportion.

The definition of engineering drawing is a graphical language used by engineers and other technical
personnel associated with the engineering profession. The purpose of engineering drawing is to convey
graphically the ideas and information necessary for the construction or analysis of machines, structures,
or systems[2]. Without technical drawings, engineering would be a discipline of enormous
guesswork. Technical drawings allow engineers to create designs, calculate forces and stresses on
structures, and work with manufacturers. The ability to understand and work with technical drawings
will not make someone a good engineer, but it is a necessary skill on the way to becoming adept in the
profession. Engineering drawings often include such features as various types of lines, dimensions,
lettered notes, sectional views, and symbols. They may be in the form of carefully planned and checked
mechanical drawings, or they may be freehand sketches. Usually a sketch precedes the mechanical
drawing[3] .

There are many steps that engineer doing for completing a design, includes : information gathering, idea
generation, concept enhancement and design visualization. To create a product drawing needs a
sequential process which systematically ,so that purpose of making engineering drawings can get to its
destination. All designers must have gone through this process, start from the information gathering
even to design visualization.

Information gathering is first step before engineers do their design. Engineers gathering the information
for many reasons. Engineers may not actually create designs, but analyze or perform calculations on
them. A common example involves the calculation of the maximum stress on a machine part. By
gathering the information about materials, geometry, and forces on a part from an engineering drawing,
the engineer runs calculations to determine whether it will fail due to internal shear, compressive or
tensile stresses.

Importance of Technical Drawing to Architecture

1. Creating Designs
o Engineers often create original designs that must be presented to others. Even if you can
make a drawing understandable to yourself, it will not be readable to others if it does not
follow the conventions of technical drawing. Engineers may design machine parts,
composite structures or circuits that will involve the collaboration of several people. It is
fine to sketch your basic ideas by hand while creatively brainstorming, but the details of the
design must eventually be cemented into a format that is mutually understood.

Reading Designs
o Engineers may not actually create designs, but analyze or perform calculations on them. A
common example involves the calculation of the maximum stress on a machine part. By
gathering the materials, geometry, and forces on a part from an engineering drawing, the
engineer runs calculations to determine whether it will fail due to internal shear,

Modifying Designs
o Designs are rarely perfect the first time around, and usually involve an iterative process of
modifying several factors. An engineer may work with a team by modifying the dimensions,
geometry, materials or couplings to meet goals for safety, value and functionality. As an
example, an engineer might be given the task of reducing the weight of an object by 5
percent without detracting from its functionality. A technical drawing is the only way to
show exactly how the design would change.

Manufacturing
o A technical drawing can give machine operators information on how to manufacture an
item. It is the engineer's responsibility to create the design in a way that does not call for
excessively difficult or complex manufacturing processes. An engineering drawing should
contain sufficient views and acceptable surface finishes, tolerances and geometries to be
manufactured with the available equipment.

Computer Software
o Technical drawings are created and modified through a number of computer-aided design
programs, such as AutoCAD and SolidWorks. These programs have long moved past
cutting-edge status and are now practically considered a standard part of an engineer's skill
set. To use these programs effectively, one must understand the different line types, views,
dimensions and information included in technical drawings.
