MUSIC and TIMING: #2,18 - Practice Listening
Music terms:
- tiempos = counts
- pares = (rhythm) in pairs e.g. 4/4, or 2 x 2/4 (=pares) (count: 1 2 3 4 or 1 2 1 2 or 1 & 2 &)
- comps = time/meter/rhythm; one measure (e.g. 4 counts, 12 counts).
beat - with which to mark the time; time - intervals in a phrase; bar - in the pentagram (mus
lines); rhythm. Usually are 2 x 4 counts in a Slo Comps.
Comps de dos por cuatro=2/4 time; comps mayor/menor = four-four/two-four time
- estrofa = stanza (grp of lines as repeated)
- estribillo=letra=choral part in flamenco or el verso =verse in a song
- acento = stressed beat
- marcar (marcaje) = to beat (stress/mark) the time/rhythm i.e. marcar el comps/ritmo e.g. step..
Dancing .. to the music:
- when musicians are playing, can do stamping/clapping; dont stamp (zapateado) when singing.
- letra = words/lyrics i.e. singing part. For example, is 8 compases.
e.g. the Intro, Cha cha and Ratn parts.
- temple = the singer enters Aaaa-eeee (templar la voz = warm up, tune)
- cierre (closing/end) = when the music or singing or X stops/ends e.g. a drum flare!
Signals the end of one part, as an intro to another. We start dancing 2 beats after the cierre.
e.g. a big guitar strum or drum roll or some musical flare - signals end of instrumental,
and beginning of singing or dancing.
e.g. a laila la la/singing interlude - signals the beginning of dancing or a change in music.
called temple - like for Introduction dance part (aaaaa-eeee)
- escobilla = just guitar and dancer, no singing; is a std sequence of steps e.g. just before the subida
- subida = are our steps - she nicknamed ours de Barca
- remate = a round/finish off/culmination; like a cierre (but not an end);
the singer takes a breath e.g. fast stamping steps

POSITIONS -
Body position:
- back not curved/arched, not rigid, but straight
- shoulders back, down and relaxed
- arms out from side of body a bit and held up a bit (by shoulders), elbows facing outward a bit
- knees not rigid, very slightly bent (relaxed) - if too bent thigh muscles get over-strained
- generally body is a bit squashed down (not tall and erect).
- coja aire - means stretch out stomach/chest (thrust chest out) vs
quita aire- means tighten/compress stomach muscles inward (scrunch tog stomach).
Its not like pelvic rotate (as in belly dancing) - is more about muscles in abdomen working
vs pelvis tilting down or up (to tuck in bum, or stick out bum) - sort of...
Note: stomach moves (with breathing) not visible - dont hunch, or arch back when doing it.
Arm/hand positions:
- arms kind of 2-dimensional (hand, elbow.. like kung fu posn!)
- arm across front - out front, level, slightly curved/arced towards body, hand an extension of arm,
like a balcony.
- generally:
- shoulders always relaxed/down and back;
remember arms move w/shldr as one unit (not from shldr joint)
- arms always arced (this: not: )
and tilted forward slightly; theyre turned inwards.
Sort of like body-builder pose: outer side of arm is fwd (back of hand/up. arm faces front).
17-Sep-17 Flamenco Dance Lessons Jan-Mar, Apr-Jun 2011 3
- if bent, elbow is leading
- hands (forearms) are also usually below the elbow; bent 90 at wrist when turning.

- if you flick hands/arms up or out to side or down.. only go as far as level with body, not further
back.
- bolsillo(=like in front jeans pocket) - arm is lowered, hand is at front-side of lower body, just
overlapping body (near groin/trouser pocket); elbow pointing outward to side, back of arm facing
front.
- televisin - one arm across body at about waistline height,
- other above & framing head (like wrapping yourself up).

Arm position in front: (e.g. for hand circles)

- like youre holding a big beach ball in front of you:
- arms in front of you in a circle, elbows out from body, hands at abdomen height (belly).
- hands with fingers straight, finger tips touching; palms open & facing you, or away from you.

MOVEMENTS (generally) -
- Do movements and combinations as you wish. You are free (not like ballet)!
- feet apart a bit, not beyond hip bones width. Knees slightly bent.
- shoulders relaxed (back & down), shoulder is back (in line with your back).
- chest is open (like shoulders spread out to sides), and almost thrust forward
- dont bounce up and down (vertically). Keep all your dancing on one level in all movements.
- head - turn to face direction arm is moving; or look across over an extended arm (e.g. in front).
- arms geny - moves as a unit from the centre point on your back between the shoulder blades
(not as if connected at shoulder joint!)
- move whole arm as if its a big arc/bow
- lead with elbow - on raising at sides, in front
- when raise to sides, usually lead with back of hands facing you (palms outwards), elbows
high. (I think I get it finally! - 14 April - from her videos)
- hands - when done around your head, will look like youre pretending to talk on cellphone!
- always have a space between your fingers when turning - like a mariposa (butterfly)!
- generally move the hands: fingers together, hand straight;
when do the circle, is sort of snappily flick down to wrist/towards the arm movement
(and could start the movement with back of hand first bent twds forearm i.e. 90).
- Exception: Men - dont do so many rotations, and keep fingers closer tog on rotations.
- steps/stamps - knees bent a bit, weight down in bum;
- force/momentum of foot comes in from behind (knee is bent, foot comes in from behind),
NOT from knee rising, and force coming down from above.
Movements - HAND circles: #1 - Practice this
- you rotate your entire wrist
- arms like holding a bch ball, shoulders down/back, palms facing you (in line w/abdom not high
up, then move out from body), elbows out (keep them out and immobile).
a) inward circle: (R hand initially counter-clockwise)
= Entrar (twds you - enter the circle), Salir (exit sidewds, wrists/hands 90), Subir (face upwds)
On entrar, lead inward with baby finger, others follow to closed hand (fingers come tog
until thumb wraps around index finger middle joint - fingers:bk of hand 90);
on salir, fingers in a closed hand, twisting wrist (& fingers) outward;
on subir, gradually open hand outward & upward again with baby finger, others follow til
straight.
When not turning, is flat and straight (up/out, or bend backwards towards forearm);
when beginning turn, start it with a snappy flick of hand to bent posn (esp if outward circle)
- she calls it flicking like a pinball machine;

17-Sep-17 Flamenco Dance Lessons Jan-Mar, Apr-Jun 2011 4

when turning, hand is 90 to forearm (so rectangle - fingers, palm, forearm) all the way to
outside/inside.
at end of turning, bring hand flat and straight/out again; and then probably rotate it to face
inward/outward direction again to do another of same circle (pivot hands 180 to begin
circle in opposite direction i.e. outward).
b) outward circle: (R hand initially clockwise)
- arms like above, but palms facing away from you
Lead outward circle (away from you) with 2nd,3rd finger, others follow;
to closed hand (see above); move fingers together and pointing upwards, then around.
{This is Helgas style. Some lead initially with baby finger, one at a time.}
Movements - ARMS: #2,3 - PRACTICE THIS
- are lots of variations (See videos - 14 Feb, 21 Mar)
Both the same.
One up, other hanging down; one up, other mid-body; one side, other down.
Turn head to say hello to neighbour.. (a la vecina)
upstairs (look up to extended arm above head),
next door (look left or right, or over arm out the side),
downstairs (look over arm, which is extended out front).
- In circle (generally, arms in shape like holding big beach ball)
- Both: upward at sides to above head (palms outwd), dn in front of body (forearms face body)
upward at sides to above head (palms inwd), dn in front of body (forearms face floor)
- Separate: one does above, other is hanging dn by side of body (fingers aimed inward/outwd)
If one hand circles across body and crosses/meets opposite leg which is in front = cruzando.
- Both - opposite sides/angles, and ending with:
- both together around body - pausing at corners of vertical square,
across bottom, like a pendulum swinging.
- With hip movement (fwd step and back), or with moving fwd/back and lifted leg:
(in 2 counts, or faster the complete movement/circle in 1 count)
hand circles down at sides; Inward, or outward unfolding
hand circles arms swoop up to shldr height in front, then down;
hand circles arms swoop up the sides to above head in wide circle, then down.
- Scrunched (body arced down) to Right/Left
R arm curved (hand at belly), raise curved arm up front to above head(head is to R); then dn.
Reverse.
Circle (reverse arms) from R above head, and L in front of belly to opposite posns
crossing body, or just up/dn sides.
Like windmill.
More jazzy ARM movements: #14 - PRACTICE THIS
From hands at pockets (remember always arm is slightly arcd, elbow leads, hand flat, fingers tog):
- throw R arm straight out to R - only as far as body and shldr height (not behind body, nor up/dn).
Hands: Cup/curl tog inward, then flick out straight to side, palm open, facing fwd.
Head: Flick head diry to R; not as looking to neighbour(=slightly tilted down/upwards).
Reverse.
- throw R arm straight up above head (vertical extension of shldr).
Hands: Cup/curl, then flick up, palm open, facing fwd.
Head: Flick head up; but not back far (like a snubb!).
Reverse.
- more too with hip thrusts #14

WARM-UP EXERCISES - feet about 1 ft apart (See Videos) PRACTICE THIS

- hand movements - Jo - stretch out finger/arm joints (self-massage)
- head - tilt slowly to L & to R & fwd using other hand; rotate slowly, but not bend backwds really
- add shoulders/upper body to the tilt R, fwd, & L - arms hanging & gently (like rotate upper body)
Finish with slowly uncurl spine, shoulders.. when straightening up in centre.
17-Sep-17 Flamenco Dance Lessons Jan-Mar, Apr-Jun 2011 5
- rotate shoulder joints (hombro) - full slow circle bk and fwd (& self-massage):
- one arm first, backward; then turn head back same dirn;
then add hand/arm with it. Reverse direction.
- then do both arms together - forward circles, then backwards circles.
- arms 3 lvls: rotate shoulders, twirl hands in pocket;
rotate and include arms up to chest height;
rotate and circle arms (out wide) to over head and down.
- add chest/stomach (open/compress). Doing almost a belly dance stomach roll.
- pull arm across body; raise elbow up by ear - twirl hands while do this.
- move arms in various combinations - together (up,dn,round), then in complimentary positions,
then around body
- raise arms to above head (breathe in) & stretch spine (arch back a bit),
then lower arms in front with fists (breathe out) & suck in gut (bend back)
- combine arms with steps -
- Step R to R (weight on R), unroll R arm to R, leading with shoulder, L arm bent in ;
Step L to L (wt on L), unroll L arm to L.., R arm curls in twds body (like wave)
- Step R to R (weight on R), raise arms fr frnt out to sides(chest open,brthe), (like wing flap)
then Step R back to centre (beside L). Reverse to L
- Step R diag to R, arms out wide (chest open) and Step R, (stretch out)
bring arms close in tog (tighten stomach), Lift L foot up (weight on R). (compress)
Reverse. Step L diag L.. (when step, L is already in air).
- Step R diag to R, facing fwd, hips face fwd, arms out wide; (a step out and back)
turn upper body to diag R, raise arms straight upward out to sides (breathe in, stomach
open/straight), {lift L foot off ground behind};
turn toward front, bring arms dn in fists, forearms Xd (breathe out,compress stomach),
Lift L leg (bend twds stomach). Reverse: Step L diag L...
- lean out, quick twist around: #4,5 - PRACTICE THIS
As above.. Step R diag to R, facing diag; turn to R, {lift L foot off ground};
then quickly (snappily) twist body 180 towards centre, compress stomach, bring arms in
towards inside (crossed-like hiding),{raise L knee, point toe}. Reverse: Step L diag L
- with one foot in front, swing both arms fwd together (from down to up),
rolling pelvis in a circle (hips are most forward in mid-motion). (Bit belly-dancing-like).
Compress abdomen as bring arms together in front to top,
stretch abdomen and bring arms down (forearms facing ground) to bottom.
- turning (over-extended) in a circle R (or L):
Step to R, twist upper body further to R with arms up at a V (far as car with upper body);
then step L foot about 90 in dirn of turning, and twist upper body further (ahead) to R; take
another step L.. until facing front.
- rub whole body - relax and get circulation going.

CLAPPING - #1 - PRACTICED THIS

How: With arms away from sides a bit and out in front (not near body);
elbows in front at chest height, hands at upper chest height (not neck=too high)
- cup palms a little, hold L hand firm, clap/cup R onto L.
- R palm onto L palm, fold R fingers around web {if have R middle finger close, cups }
- R fingers (tog) onto cupped L palm
On non-clap beat or end of claps: do mantequilla (butter) = smooth out your clap
At the end of the claps: with a slight wrist twist, slide hand off the fingers, or up the thumb.
Clapping (BINRIO beat) - #1
- stamp, clap clap clap + mantequilla
( 1 2 3 4 )
Clapping (DOCES beat) - #14,16 - PRACTICE THIS

( 1 2 ^ 3 1 2 ^ 3 1 ^ 2 1 ^ 2 1 ^ 2 )

STEPS (for BINRIO beat) - #1 - PRACTICE THIS

- begin in place with the Stamp+Claps (intro)
Stamp+Claps: (used as an introduction before you begin steps/sequences of your dance)
Body facing slightly diagonally towards L (if leading with R foot);
Weight is on L foot, knee slightly bent; feet perpendicular to each other (R behind & near L);
Arms in clap position.
- 1 Stamp R, 2 clap, 3 clap, 4 clap (then hands mantequilla on the stamp beat). Repeat
OR
- feet: + Stamp on R (near L), 2 3 4
hands: (butter) clap, clap, clap
Faster version (seen at a flamenco bar):
- 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &
Stamp clap clap clap Stamp clap clap clap
Basic Cross-Step (Binrio):
- when crossing - dont cross past the other foot. Cross TO the other foot (a bit further if behind)
- toe touch e.g. R to R side. Foot always follows natural leg line; foot faces front /slightly diag front
- Feet: For 4 counts (once) or 8 counts (twice).
st
1 Step R across in front of L (1 count is usually - Step R fwd)
2 Touch L to L side
3 Step L across in front of R
4 Touch R to R side.
Then Reverse - same as above, but cross behind and touch to sides. Keep body level.
Arms: Do arms as wish, but to count of: 2 (up) then 2 (dn) or 3 (up) then 1 (dn)
Raise arms out to sides slowly to meet at top above your head;
then lower arms in front of body (hands crossed over each other),
twirling hands (vuele 2-3 times in each direction if you wish).

HIP MOVEMENTS -
- Do a hip circle towards outside or towards inside ...
on the foot thats extended/out (lean into extended foot) e.g. out to side or to front.
Note (position): Dont swing hips out wide, and keep hips facing forward.
- Hips do a circle outward (to side), then around inward as you compress your stomach
- dont transfer weight to forward foot - move hips that way only
Hip step: (like belly dancing stomach roll) #3,4 - PRACTICE THIS
- 1 Step on R toe (quite far) forward, thrust R hip fwd/side over toe. (Coja aire brthe in; chest
open)
2 Step on L foot (in place), rock R hip back to ctr. (Quita aire tighten stom musc.)
3 Step on R toe beside L.
4 Pause. (chg weight to R, rock hips to R) Do the reverse (4 counts) - L toe forward
Arms: (R hand at R pocket - front hip joint, near body); body slightly leaning backwards
1,2 L arm (oppos to extended leg) circles back low to top front (inward hand circles)
3,4 L arm drops down front ^ is cruzando
DEFINITELY - thrust hip fwd/side? (like pelvic thrust) on when step forward;
- just before fwd thrust, have a bit of a side hip thrust
- can also be like a hip thrust to side when step on it.

17-Sep-17 Flamenco Dance Lessons Jan-Mar, Apr-Jun 2011 7

Hip circle: (like belly dancing) #14 - PRACTICE THIS
Body is scrunched down (knees bent a bit). Keep upper body in place; rock hips out - side/fwd.
- thrust R hip out to R
- thrust pubs out fwd (stomach crunch/compress in tight)
- thrust L hip out to L
- thrust bum up in back (arch lower back)

FOOTWORK -
Note: When doing stamps quickly, all the work is in lower legs; dont move the hips, no bouncg.
Video 8486
Toe-heel step:
- stamp/step firmly on ball of foot (not just on the toes, as in ballet!) toe planta/ tee
with toes 90 to rest of foot, foot straight in line with lower leg. (exaggerated/extreme)
(Or get the effect with just bending foot = squeezing calf muscle)
- then bring heel down firmly (in place) - dont move the foot. heel tacn / ko
Repeat with the other foot.
If both toe-heel steps done with feet together, place toe in line with (beside toes of) other foot.
Stamping:
- weight is on (L) foot: lift ( R) foot up behind (bend/hinge from knee), Video 8487
strike it solidly on ground, flat (whole foot), close to (L) foot.
- keep knees fixed (dont raise knee up/forward).
- NO hip movement - its all done with the lower leg,
especially when its fast (not like Latin dancing, where its all from the hips).
Moving fwd/back with one lifted leg (sostenido - delayed):
- have stomach tight; body facing forward.
Moving bkwd:
- 1 (on L) Lift R foot in front, bent knee, toe pointed (lift chest a bit)
& Pause as move bkwd
a Step back on R, bending L knee (as in a dip), then lift L foot fwd, bent knee, toe pointed.
2 Step back on L..
Repeat.
Moving fwd:
- as above but bent leg comes up to meet other (beside the calf), from behind
1 (on L) Step R fwd on bent knee (lift chest a bit)
& Lift L foot behind but near R calf,
a Pause as move fwd
2 Step on L fwd..
Repeat.
Arms: Both do circles (changing with each lift step) - first beside hips; then circle tog in front to
shldr height and bk dn (by sides but behind almost); then full round circle coming dn ctr
front.
Moving in a circle to R/L:
- Step R to R Straight arms circle at shoulder height both to R (with L elbow bent across body).
Step L to L Straight arms cross body at shoulder heightt to L (with R elbow bent across body).
Can repeat.
- or above, then into a turn:
Step again R to R, then turning to R, Step L 180 and Step R, to R (completing circle on R to R).
Arms: stay extended outwards and end crossing body as above.
Reverse to circle to the L.

MORE STEPS - #2
Toe-Heel Combination Steps: (in place) (remember, knees are very slightly bent)
17-Sep-17 Flamenco Dance Lessons Jan-Mar, Apr-Jun 2011 8
(See toe-heel step description earlier) (when done quickly, heel is not really very diagly placed)
