Merchant Navy Entrance Exam


For Indian male citizens Combined Entrance Examination for admission to the 3-ye
ar Navigation course leading to B.Sc. (Nautical Sciences) Degree on Training Shi
p Chanakya (formerly T.S. Rajendra), Mumbai and 4-year Marine Engineering Course
at Marine Engineering Research Institute, Kolkata is held every year generally
in the month of the May. Only male Indian citizens are eligible to appear in the
entrance examination. They are required to take the Joint Entrance Examination,
to be concluded by IIT s on the month of May.
2. Seats: T.S. Chanakya, Mumbai-SO seats; M.E.R.I., Kolkata - 120 seats.
3. Minimum Qualification: Candidate must have passed Std. XII under the 10+2 sys
tem or equivalent examination with individual passing in Mathematics, Physics an
d Chemistry as separate subjects. Candidates who have appeared or intend to appe
ar at any such examination will be accepted provisionally, provided they furnish
proof of having passed the examination at the time of personal interview or by
latest by the time of joining the courses.
4. Age Limit: Candidates must not exceed the age limit of 20 years as on Oct. 1
of the year of examination. The upper age limit for Scheduled Castes and Schedul
ed Tribes candidates is 25 years.
5. Reservation of Seats : 15% seats are reserved for Scheduled Castes and 75% se
ats for Scheduled Tribes, provided suitable candidates are available.
6. Application Procedure: Details of training programme at the two institutions
can be obtained in December/January from the (i) Directorate General of Shipping

ave, New Mumbai-400706, (iii) LBS College of Advanced Maritime Studies and Resea

stitute, P-19, Taratola Road, Kolkata-700038 by sending a self - addressed envel
ope (30 cm x 12 cm) bearing the postage alongwith a crossed Indian postal order.
7. Selection: The eligible candidates are required to appear at a Joint Entrance
Exam. * The subjects of the written test, the time allowed and the maximum mark

N.B. (i) Candidates need only to obtain 35% marks in English
Papers and marks secured will not be added to the total marks.
(ii) A candidate has, however, to secure atleast pass marks (35%) in each of the
remaining papers in order to be considered for inclusion in the merit list and
called for interview (100 marks).

led for a personal interview and Medical Examination at Mumbai.
10. Medium of Training: The Training Programme at the Institutions will be condu
cted in English only.
Detailed Syllabus
English : Guided Composition-essay and paragraph to test presentation of ideas a
nd clarity of expression, reading comprehension, precise writing, English gramma
r, usage, structure and forms of transformation, vocabulary, ability to recognis
e and use common and useful English words and phrase.
Physics: Units and dimensions, SI Units. Displacement, velocity, kinematics in o
ne and two dimensions with constant acceleration, projectiles, concepts of relat
ive motion, circular motion. Newton's laws of motion, concepts of inertial frame
s, momentum. Forces: Friction, spring force, tension and gravitational force, wo
rk, energy and power, conservation of momentum and energy. Universal law of grav
itation variation of the acceleration due to gravity with altitude and latitude,
Kepler's law, motion of planets and satellites assuming circular orbits. Simple
harmonic motion. Centre of mass of a system of particles, elastic and inelastic
collisions in one dimensions.
Rigid bodies: Moments of inertia of simple shapes like ring, disk, cylinder and
sphere, angular momentum torque. Conservation of angular momentum.

Hooke's law: Young's modulus, shear and bulk moduli. Principle of buoyancy, pres
sure in a fluid.
Wave motion: Concepts of amplitude, frequency and phase, longitudinal and transv
erse waves, progressive and stationary waves, vibration of strings and air colum
ns, resonance, beats,
velocity of sound, echoes, Doppler s effect, quality and pitch of sounds. Thermal
expansion of solids, liquids and gases. Ideal gas laws, absolute temperature, sp
ecific heat, Cp' Cv and y; isothermal and adiabatic processes. Calorimetry, laten
t heat, equivalence of heat and work, conduction, convection and radiation. Elem
ents of kinetic theory of gases, pressure of an ideal gas, equipartition of ener
gy, temperature. Coulomb's law, electric field, lines of force, electric potenti
al, capacitance, dielectric constant, parallel plate capacitors, capacitors in s
eries and parallel, energy stored in a capacity.
Electric current: Ohm's law, series and parallel arrangements of resistances and
cells, Kirchoffs laws, wheat-stone bridge and applications, heating effects of
current, magnetic field due to a current, magnetic moment of a current loop, for
ce on a moving coil galvanometer, voltmeter, ammeter, electromagnetic induction.
Faraday's and Lenz's laws, self mutual inductances.
. Rectilinear propagation and velocity of light, reflection and refraction at pl

Chemistry : Electron, proton and neutron: Constitution of nucleus; properties of
alpha, beta and gamma rays, Rutherford's scattering experiment, Bohr's atomic m
odel (mathematical details excluded), quantum numbers, Pauli's exclusion princip
le, Hund's rule, Aufbau principle, electronic configuration of elements (up to a
tomic number 36), shapes of s, p and d orbitals.
Periodic Tables: Periods and groups, classification of elements with respect to
s, p and d-blocks, periodicity in properties, namely, atomic and ionic radii, io
nisation energy, electron affinity and electronegativity.
Chemical Bond: Electrovalent (ionic) and covalent (including coordinate) bonds,
polarity in molecules, dipole moment (qualitative aspect only), concept of hybri
disation involving s and p orbitals only, hydrogen bond. Behaviour of Gases: Avo
gadro s law, equation of state for an ideal gas, diffusion of gases, kinetic theor

Stoichiometry: Balancing equations for chemical reactions (including oxidation-r
eduction reactions using ion-electron and oxidation number methods), calculation

of mole concept. Solutions: Expressing concentration in terms of mole fraction,
molality, molarity and normality, lowering of vapour pressure, Raoult's law. Co
ncepts of Chemical Equilibrium: Laws of mass action, equilibrium constant, exoth
ermic and endothermic reactions, Le Chatelier's principle and its applications,

Thermochemistry: Heat of formations, heat of combustion and heat of reaction, He
ss's law. Chemical Kinetics: Rates of reactions, order of reactions, rate, const
ant and half-life period of first order reactions, elementary concepts of cataly
sis, Faraday's laws of electrolysis, galvanic cells, cell reaction and e.m.f. of
cells involving the following electrodes only: Zn/Zn++; Cu/Cu++; Fe/Fe++; Sn/Sn
++; Pt, H2/H+; Cl/Cl2, Pt.
Electrochemical Series: Hydrogen and hydrogen peroxide preparation, properties a
nd uses. Sodium, Potassium, Magnesium minerals, extraction, properties and hydro
xides, carbonates, bicarbonates.
Aluminium: Minerals, extraction, properties and uses, compounds, alumina, alumin
ium, chloride and alums.
Carbon: Occurence, allotropes and oxides.
Tin and Lead: Important minerals, extraction, properties and uses, compounds, ox
ides and chlorides.
Nitrogen and Phosphorous: Sources, compounds, oxides and oxyacids, ammonia, fert
ilisers.
Oxygen and Sulphur: Properties, allotropes, compounds, hydrogen sulphate, sodium
thiosulphate, oxides, sulphurous and sulphuric acids. Chlorine, Bromine and Iod
ine: Preparation, properties and uses, compounds, hydrochloric acids, oxy-acids
of chlorine; bleaching powder. Iron, Copper, Silver and Zinc :Occurence, extract
ion; refining properties and uses, compounds, ferrous sulphate; ferric oxide", f
erric chloride, copper sulphate; silver nitrate, silver bromide; zinc oxide and
zinc sulphide.
Note: In the case, all the compounds mentioned above their preparation, properti
es and uses are included. Concepts of hybridisation of carbon, sigma and pi-bond
s, resonance, homologous series, structural isomerism, nomenclature.
Alkanes: Substitution reactions, alkanes and alkynes, addition
reactions, ozoanalysis.
Benzene: Structure, nitration, sulphonation, halogenation and acylation reaction
. Characteristics reactions of the following functional groups: Alcohol (esterif
ication, dehydration, oxidation, reactions with sodium and phosphorus halides),
Phenol (halogenation, nitration, sulphonation); aldehyde and ketone (Oxidation,
reduction oxime and hydrazone formation, aldol, condensation and Canizzaro's rea
ction), carboxylic acid (formation of ester, amide and acid chloride).
Preparation, properties and uses of the following: Ethanol, ethylene, acetylene,

Mathematics
Algebra: Complex number as an ordered pair of real numbers, geometrical represen
tation, real and imaginary .parts, absolute value and conjugation, triangle ineq
uality. Theory of quadratic equations and expression: Relationship between roots
and coefficients, linear and quadratic in equations in one variable; arithmetic
, geometric and harmonic progressions, permutations and combinations, elementary
applications of mathematical induction. Binomial theorem for a positive integra
l index. Determinants of order two and three and their elementary properties, so
lutions of simultaneous linear equations in two and three variables.
Coordinate Geometry: Rectangular Cartesian co-ordinates, distance between two po
ints, area of a triangle, straight line, angle between two lines, parallel and p
erpendicular lines, distance of a point from a line, circle, equation of tangent
and normal to a circle, parametric representation.
Trigonometry: Trigonometric functions and their graphs, additions and substracti
on formulae, multiple and submultiple angles, general solutions of trigonometric
equations, solutions of triangles, simple applications in finding heights and d
istances.
Calculus: Functions, into, onto, and one-one functions, polynomial, rational, tr
igonometric, logarithmic and exponential functions. Notion of limit and continui
ty of a function, derivative of a point, derivatives of sum, differences, produc
t and quotients of functions, derivatives of polynomial, rational, trigonometric

Vectors: Additions of vectors, multiplications by a scalar, scalar product, cros
