Georgia Performance Standards - SC4.4b Investigates and describes different types or speeds
of motion.

Safety Considerations
Stay with group when on the playground.
Not to push partners too forcefully down the slid.

The Learning Plan

ENGAGE: watch the Jack Hartman song Push and Pull from youtube.com. This also works
as a review of the vocabulary and also to get the students perform the motions in the song. I will
then use the garage toy (which has ramps on it) with cars. Have the students paly with the cars
and ramp. Then I am going to tell them that we are going to be doing a science experiment on the
playground.

EXPLORE:
-In whole group, I will model how to use the I Wonder sheet to ask a question, make a
hypothesis, and draw a picture. The teacher will explain the experiment which goes as follows:
Each person will take turns sliding three ways:
No Push When they are sitting at the top of slide not moving, they are at rest. Sit at the top
of the slide just above the top tape mark.
Hold your position until the timer (the other adult and perhaps a student volunteer after
modeling) says, Go! Let go, cross your arms, and wiggle forward until gravity starts to
pull you down, and slide. The timer stops the watch when the tape crosses the tape line at
the bottom.
Self Push Get into the same starting position as above, but this time, when the timer
says, Go! push yourself off with your hands and arms. Timing happens the same way.
Partner Push Once again, start in the same position. This time have a friend push you
down the slide when the timer says, Go! Timing happens the same way.
The teacher will record the times for each slider on a sheet.

- After explaining the steps, the students will be broken into three groups. Two students per
teacher.
- The teachers will work with the students to fill out the first two parts of the I Wonder
sheet.
- The students will draw a picture of their prediction.

EXPLAIN:

- The class will meet in the as a whole group in circle

- Teacher will ask which kind of push was the fastest? and which push was the
strongest? Do you think the size of the person doing the push makes a difference in how
fast someone goes down the slid? why.
- I will explain that a big push = a big distance and faster time and a little push= a shorter
distance or slower time.
- I will also explain that they were being pushed in the direction they were sliding. A push
down = sliding down.

EXTEND/Evaluate :

- The students will be then broken into three groups.

- They will go around the room looking or things to push.
- They will push hard and soft and they will push big and small objects.
- As the students are doing this activity, teaches will be asking questions what do you
think will happen when you push a big/small item?, How can you make this object
move?, who is the force causing the motion?. Teachers might use simper vocabulary
to ask these questions if the students do not understand them. The students answers to
these questions will be the evaluation needed to assess their understanding of the concept
of pushing, push as a force, relations between force and speed.

Title of the Lesson: A sliding we will go

Lesson Logistics:

- We will start as whole group to introduce the experiment

- Break into three small group with two students per teacher to work on the I wonder
sheets. The high functioning students will be with the teacher assistants and lower
functioning students will be with teacher.
- Do experiment as a whole group.
- Discuss results as a whole group.
- Do the extend and evaluate part of the lesson as small group.

Materials:

- I wonder sheets
- 3 types of push data recording sheet
- Stop watch
- Items from the classroom to push.

Opening/Hook/Initial Focus:

- Jack Hartman Push and Pull song from youtube.

- Talk about going outside to slide down and do an experiment.

Closing:
- We will meet in circle as whole group.
- We will watch seseamestreet.org/STEM and review vocabulary of force and motion.
